Thanks to the wonderful response from grandparents, this year’s Grandparents University is sold out. However, please join the mailing list and be among the first to find out in advance about Grandparents University 2013 when information becomes available! Find out more at www.grandparents.msu.edu.
There’s more fun – and more participants – every year at MSU’s Grandparents University, a popular summer camp experience designed for children ages 8-12 and their grandparents, many of them MSU alumni. The three-day campus experience, offered this year June 26-28, is a chance for youngsters to live and dine in the dorms, attend classes and learn about MSU. Alumni enjoy reliving their college days while exploring new areas of campus and creating lifelong memories with their grandchildren.
Launched in June 2006, with just 400 “campers,” event participation has grown annually. This year’s Grandparents University will welcome more than 1,000 children and grandparents to the MSU campus.
“Each year Grandparents U has added more classes and opened up more registrations in response to the popularity of this inter-generational camp for kids and grandparents. And every year it’s a sell-out,” says Connie Lawson, assistant director for Alumni Relations at the Broad College and a member of the event’s campus committee.
More than 100 classes are offered along with tours and fun evening activities. All faculty and instructors volunteer their time to present classes and lead activities in classrooms and facilities all across campus.
In the Broad College, six classes are offered. They are: No Yolk Construction – Don Conlon (Management Department); My First Lemonade Stand and Other Lessons in Early Entrepreneurship – Sam Carter (Marketing); Summer Cooking for Kids – John Findley (Henry Center/University Club); Bulls and Bears in Your Future – Greg Sabin (Finance); The Nest Egg Game – Harold Sollenberger (Accounting and Information Systems); and Just in Time – Judy Whipple (Supply Chain Management). Another dozen or more Broad College staff support Grandparents University through volunteering in pre-event organizing activities or during the event days on campus.
The program is self-supporting and relies entirely on registration fees for funding. Registration includes meals, classes and housing. A limited number of scholarships are available.
Annual registration for Grandparents University takes place in December and remains open until all available registrations are sold.
