On Tuesday, March 14, MSU held its Empower Extraordinary Southern California event at the Broad contemporary art museum in Los Angeles. Attending the event were alumni from across the U.S., including Eli Broad (BA Accounting ’54), and university leadership, such as President Lou Anna K. Simon and Dean Sanjay Gupta. See photos from the event.
Scott and Patricia Eston (both BA Business ’78) established the Scott and Pat Eston Fund for Sustainability with a $400,000 gift to outfit the Business College Pavilion with energy-saving technologies and to support efficiencies to achieve the highest LEED status. Beyond the impact the gift will have on the building’s sustainable operations, it will serve as a vehicle to help students understand the implications of sustainability in business decisions.
Kyle Welch (BA Hospitality Business ’09) was honored by MSU as Spartan Innovator at the 2017 Sparty Ball in Chicago. He is the president of Chicago Scoops, LLC, which owns 37 Cold Stone Creamery and two Little Caesar’s Pizza restaurants. He has also agreed to match any gift, up to $1,000 per department, to Broad’s Student Philanthropy Crowdfunding Project.
EMBA/AMP/WMBA alumni are invited for an evening designed to “Recharge Your MBA” May 10, 5–7:30 p.m. in East Lansing. At this latest Broad EMBA Faculty Speaker Series event Charlie Hadlock, Frederick S. Addy Distinguished Chair in Finance, will present “Recent Trends in Mergers, Acquisitions, and Corporate Ownership,” and Ayalla Ruvio, assistant professor of marketing, will present “Current Issues in Marketing That Are Impacting Your Business.” The evening also features plenty of networking time to reconnect with classmates over hors d’oeuvres and a cash bar. The event is free, but registration is required.
Commencement Speakers Announced
Todd Penegor (BA Accounting ’87, MBA Finance ’89), president and CEO of Wendy’s, will present the keynote address at Broad’s undergraduate commencement May 6. Darren Walker, president of the Ford Foundation, will speak at the advanced degree ceremony.
Broad’s Full-Time MBA Program led all top programs in increase in GMAT scores from 2012 to 2016, according to an analysis by business-school-focused publication Poets & Quants. Broad’s average was up 29 points, from 641 to 670, over that time period.
Full-Time MBA students participated in Extreme Green – a short, four-part workshop-style course, designed to tap into creativity through experiential learning. The program with corporate partner Disney focused on creative problem solving and applying what they learned to a Shark Tank-style case competition to develop an original business concept.
While lying in a hospital bed, the last thing one should have to worry about is the threat of a personal data breach. Yet, recent Broad research found nearly 1,800 occurrences of large data breaches in patient information over roughly a seven-year period: health care served with a side of identity theft risk.
There may be potential for establishing a “deconstruction economy” in West Michigan that collects and repurposes waste generated by abandoned structures in the Great Lakes region. The study suggests that adoption of policies that encourage deconstruction over demolition can put an end to the private property abandonment that has hindered communities for decades.
Greer Clausen (BA Finance ’17) is having extraordinary experiences that make clear the upward trajectory of her career. The generosity of MSU’s donors has provided her opportunities through Broad’s Financial Markets Institute, education abroad, the women’s golf team, and more – putting her feet on a path to success.
