Chicagoans, Come Out to SpartyBall in the Windy City

On March 8, the MSU Alumni Club of Metro Chicago will host the ninth annual SpartyBall event at the Skyline Loft of the Bridgeport Art Center. This “green tie optional” event – planned in part by Christin Burek (BA Business ’94), John Hering (BA Materials and Logistics Management ’77), Phil Kuhn (BA Finance ’77), and Nathan Paulson (MBA ’99) – is one of the Chicago Spartans’ premier events, hosting alumni and guests for an evening of philanthropy and fun. Event proceeds support the club’s endowed scholarships, which enable students from the Chicago area to attend MSU.

Celebrate with Beta Gamma Sigma Initiates

Alumni members of the Beta Gamma Sigma Society are invited to attend the spring initiation ceremony and dinner for the newest members of this international honor society of business students. The event will be held Tuesday, March 25, 5–7 p.m., in the Jackson Lounge of the Wharton Center on MSU’s campus in East Lansing. As always, the initiates are among the top 10 percent of their junior or senior class or the upper 20 percent of their graduating master’s class.

Reunion Days Welcomes Class of 1989, Class of 1964, and Earlier

Alumni Reunion Days are coming April 24–26! The Broad College has some special events planned for our 25-year and 50-year (plus) alumni. Registration details will be forthcoming in early March.

  • Reception among the Roses, April 24, 6–8 p.m. in MSU’s Horticultural Gardens: Kick off reunion weekend with hors d’oeuvres and a hosted bar in a beautiful setting to recognize the Spartans’ 2014 Rose Bowl win and their first appearance in the bowl since the class of 1989 was still in the classroom.
  • The School’s Alumni Breakfast, April 25, 8–10 a.m. at the Kellogg Hotel and Conference Center
  • Changing Times – Financial Aid and Today’s College Student, April 25, 8–10 a.m. at the University Club: Over breakfast, MSU Financial Aid Director Richard Shipman will discuss and compare the current state of federal and Michigan financial aid programs and their impact on today’s college student.

Alumnus Jeff Church to Speak at Broad Executive Forum of Chicago

Don’t miss the Seventh Annual Broad Executive Forum of Chicago, to be held Thursday, May 15, 3:30–7:45 p.m. at the University Club of Chicago. This year’s keynote speaker is Jeff Church (BA Accounting ’83), founder and CEO of Nika Water, a social cause-driven, eco-responsible, premium bottled water company. Church is the author of A Thirst for Change: How Social Entrepreneurship Can Make the World a Better Place. In what Church calls the coming wave of social entrepreneurship, products like Nika are able not only to raise money for a cause through sales, but also to spread awareness to consumers in the process. Registration is now open!

Broad MBA Program Rises in Global Rankings

Financial Times Global MBA ranking 2014In the latest Financial Times ranking of global MBA programs, the Broad MBA was ranked #52, up 10 spots from 2013 and 25 spots from 2012. The program’s placement success was also recognized, ranking #2 in the U.S. and #4 globally. More about the rankings

Finance Professor Receives “Ultimate Recognition”

Hayong Yun, assistant professor of finance, has been awarded the 2013 Brattle Group First Prize in Corporate Finance—one of the highest honors in finance. Yun was recognized for his paper “Risk Management and Firm Value: Evidence from Weather Derivatives,” which examines the impact of risk management on firms’ market value as well as financing and investment activities. IBM Partnership Brings Watson Technology to Undergraduate Classrooms

Undergraduates in the Broad College are working with IBM’s Watson software across their core courses. This cognitive computing technology is part of the next generation of tools being developed to make data useful and accessible to solve problems and improve products. More about the partnership

Broad Researcher Finds That Nighttime Smartphone Use Reduces Productivity

Using a smartphone to cram in more work at night results in less work the next day, indicates a new study co-authored by an MSU management scholar. According to the research, people who monitored their smartphones for business purposes after 9 p.m. were more tired and were less engaged the following day on the job. This research was covered in the Wall Street Journal, Forbes, U.S. News and World Report, and many other outlets. More about the study

360.24 Video Documentary Released

On November 6, Spartans on six continents captured their day as part of a documentary that aimed to capture a day in the life of Spartans all over the world. The piece will air on the Big Ten Network on February 24 at 9 p.m. or can be viewed online.

MSU among Top Producers of Peace Corps Volunteers

MSU is #14 in this year’s list of top Peace Corps volunteer-producing large universities. Since the agency’s creation, 2,322 Spartans have served overseas, making MSU the #6 all-time producer of Peace Corps volunteers. More about the ranking
