Destination Auction Online Bidding

As Destination Auction celebrates its 25th anniversary Saturday, February 20, at the Kellogg Center, alumni and friends from around the world can participate in the live charity auction, both by bidding real time and by placing an “absentee” maximum bid ahead of time, which will automatically bid up to the indicated amount as needed. Registration is now open for online bidding on the event’s exciting packages.

Entrepreneurship and Economics in Seattle

Seattle-area alumni are invited to an evening discussion on “Entrepreneurship and Economics” Thursday, March 10, 6–8 p.m. at Beardslee Public House in Bothell, Wash. The event features special guests Carl Liedholm, MSU professor of economics, and Erik Liedholm, company wine director/partner in John Howie Restaurant Group and owner/distiller of Wildwood Spirits Co. The $10 admission includes hors d’oeuvres and a cash bar. RSVP required by Thursday, March 3.

15 Years of the Black History Month Multicultural Heroes Hall of Fame Case Competition

Multicultural Business Programs celebrates 15 years of students sharing the stories of multicultural heroes through the Black History Month Multicultural Heroes Hall of Fame Case Competition, which has allowed more than 400 undergraduates to compete for prizes topping $35,000. Teams have 10 minutes to make the case for why their multicultural hero should be inducted into the Hall of Fame. The public is welcome to attend the 2016 finals Wednesday, February 17, at 6 p.m. in N100 BCC.

Broad College Leads in Study Abroad Participation

Broad student participation rates top the study abroad charts within MSU, which is currently the No. 5 public institution for study abroad participation. The Broad College has a five percent participation rate, above average for a business program.

You might not always be the most popular person on the team when you play devil’s advocate, but it will make your team better, says research being conducted by a Broad professor. According to the studies, teams require a contrarian in order to reach their potential—someone willing to go against the rest of the team and create conflict.

SSM: Student Startup MadnessStudent Startup Madness Showcases MSU Entrepreneurship

MSU student startups dominated the field of this year’s Student Startup Madness tournament. MSU sent 12 teams to the field of 64—twice as many as the next closest school—and had the most teams competing in the semi-finals at six of 32. Spartan startup Roze Inc. was selected as an Entrepreneurial Eight finalist and invited to pitch at the Student Startup Madness Finals and Championship event at SXSW on Monday, March 14.

University Research Corridor Enriches Michigan’s Economy

Michigan’s University Research Corridor—consisting of Michigan State University, the University of Michigan and Wayne State University—contributes $17.5 billion to Michigan’s economy, a new report shows. For every dollar the state invested in the three URC universities, Michigan saw $22 in economic benefits, according to the report.

Women More Sensitive to Irksome Behavior Than Men Are

A new study led by an MSU psychology professor suggests women are more likely than men to get irked at irritating or boorish behavior exhibited by acquaintances, friends, or partners. The study set out to evaluate whether women and men differ in sensitivity to the aversive behavior of the people with whom they interact.
