Hollis announced as Broad Executive Forum speaker

Mark Hollis, MSU’s athletic director, will be the featured speaker at this year’s Broad Executive Forum of Chicago on Wednesday, May 15. Hollis will share insights into the business and leadership role of Division I collegiate athletics and offer time for an audience Q&A. In addition, the forum will include a mini-session and interactive panel discussion with instructors and alumni participants of MSU’s Executive Development Programs’ “Executive Leadership for Women: Strategies to Enhance Success” and “Broad Executive Program: Strategies for High Impact Leadership” courses. Team building course offered by Broad, MSU Athletics

In addition to the Broad Executive Forum, MSU Athletics is collaborating with the Broad College’s Executive Development Programs to offer an interactive program focused on “Building Winning Teams: A Quest for Excellence.” The program, to be held May 15–17 at the Henry Center in Lansing, will feature numerous Broad College management faculty in addition to several notable members of the MSU coaching staff. Unique opportunities will include live discussion led by MSU coaches reflecting themes of the program, team competitions, and team-based activities at MSU athletic facilities. More about the course

Experience the Big Easy at Les Gourmets

Experiencing New Orleans is as easy as a night in East Lansing at this year’s Les Gourmets! The School of Hospitality Business’s premier annual event will be held Saturday, April 6, at the Kellogg Center. Under the direction of Allan Sherwin (BA Hotel & Restaurant Management ’64), the Dr. Lewis J. and Mrs. Ruth E. Minor Chef and professor of culinary management, hospitality business students will work in all areas of hospitality service to create a seven-course dinner and wonderful reception that highlights New Orleans for hundreds of guests. Celebrate spring in Austin with Dean Lenway 

Broad College alumni in the Austin area are invited to join Dean Stefanie Lenway for an evening reception at Travaasa Resort – Austin on Thursday, March 21. Alumni will be treated to a Texas-sized dose of Spartan Spirit along with hors d’oeuvres and complimentary drinks. Broad students win SXSW startup competition

A team of MSU students including Benny Ebert-Zavos (hospitality business senior) and Josh Leider (marketing senior) took first place at this year’s South by Southwest (SXSW) Student Startup Madness Tournament! The team’s concept TempoRun — an app that allows runners to set their pace to songs — beat out competitors from Emory University, Rensselaer Polytechnic University, St. Louis University, Stanford University, University of California-Berkeley, University of Chicago-Illinois, and University of Texas-Austin. Judges from BrandYourself.com, Google, Square, TechStars, and Turner Broadcasting awarded the top three teams $5,000 in credits for Google Cloud Platform. The TempoRun team also won the Broad Business Pitch Competition in December. More about the competition

Graduate supply chain program retains No. 2 ranking

According to the 2014 U.S. News & World Report ranking of Best Business Schools, the Broad College’s graduate-level supply chain program ranks second among business schools again this year. The college has held this second place position for the past decade. In addition, the accounting graduate program saw an increase in its ranking this year, up to 16th from 23rd last year, and the international program also ranked 16th. The college ranks 43rd overall, up from 44th last year, and 19th among public universities. More about the ranking

Remembering professor emeritus John Hoagland

John Hoagland, purchasing professor at the Broad College from 1952 until retirement in 1990, passed away on March 6 at the age of 93. Hoagland was internationally recognized for his contributions to education and research in purchasing and supply chain management. In addition, the Hoagland-Metzler Endowed Chair in Purchasing and Supply Management was created in 2004 in honor of Hoagland by former student Richard Metzler (BA Operations Management ’63) to attract outstanding faculty. More about Hoagland

Students honor multicultural heroes

For the 12th year, students at MSU teamed up to honor their multicultural heroes at the Multicultural Heroes Hall of Fame Case Competition organized by Multicultural Business Programs at Broad. The winning team of Christina Cafagna (marketing freshman), Sarah McCarthy (supply chain management senior), and Pallavi Vadapalli (supply chain management freshman) demonstrated how Susan B. Anthony’s work had similar goals to that of Martin Luther King Jr. The event, judged by Dean Stefanie Lenway and other MSU leaders, takes place in honor of Black History Month and helps students learn about influential people in history while enhancing their presentation skills. More about the competition

On Saturday, April 13, Spartans are invited to take part in a global day of service to help their communities and show the reach and power of the Spartan network. After a trip around the globe to highlight Spartan projects and create an interactive President’s Report, Spartans Will. 360 is close to completion. Captivating stories are available online with photos, videos, field notes, and additional commentary from MSU President Lou Anna K. Simon. From the Broad Art Museum in East Lansing, to efforts to turn garbage into energy gold in Costa Rica, and sowing a more sustainable future in Rwanda, the report showcases the impact and work of MSU scholars and students around the world. More about the report
