Hospitality Industry Disruptive Innovation Forum in San Francisco

The hospitality industry has experienced change and disruption in all phases of the business, including from sharing economy sites like Airbnb, the influence of online travel sites, and new hotel real estate financing options. Participate in the premiere forum on Hospitality Industry Disruptive Innovation: Action-Reaction, 2–7:30 p.m., October 22, at the Hyatt Fisherman’s Wharf in San Francisco, Calif. Engage with thought leaders to understand new business models and strategies to position your enterprise for success. The event is co-hosted by the San Francisco Bay Area Spartans and The School of Hospitality Business. Registration is still open!

Scholarship Luncheon Honors Donors, Alumni

The fourth annual Broad College Scholarship Luncheon October 9 brought together scholarship sponsors and students. The alumni and corporate donors of the more than 75 scholarship funds specifically for Broad College students joined some of the nearly 450 undergraduate and graduate students who receive this support. Students had the opportunity to thank donors for this educational support and also network as they look forward to their postgraduate careers.

Students and donors also joined in celebrating alumni achievement award presentations to three of the 2014–2015 recipients: Shaan Bhargava (BA Finance ’12) and Joel Clum (BA Finance ’08) for the Young Alumni Achievement Award, and Craige Stout (BA/MBA Accounting ’86) for the Outstanding Alumni Achievement Award.

Accounting Alumnus Honored for Service

Adam Kogelschatz (BA Accounting ’15, MS Accounting ’16) was recognized by MSU’s Project 60/50 for volunteering more than 200 hours with MSU’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) group in 2014. The average client served by VITA has an annual income of only $15,000, and 1,400 Lansing taxpayers received more than $5 million in refunds last year through the help of the program.

Alumnus Speaks at Inaugural Brazil Conference

Francisco Itzaina (MBA Marketing ’74), president – South America of Rolls-Royce International and past recipient of the Broad College Outstanding Alumni Award, spoke at the inaugural Brazuca Professional and Academic Development (BrazPAD) conference on campus. The event was presented by the MSU Brazilian Student Organization and hosted by the Broad College of Business.

Economist MBA Ranking: Broad among Top 20 for Career Opportunities, Salary Prospects

The Economist logoThe Economist’s latest “WhichMBA?” ranking of full-time MBA programs recognized the Broad MBA as the #21 U.S. program and #8 public program. Additionally, Broad was among the top 20 globally for salary and for programs that open new career opportunities. The ranking was released today.

International Business Center Celebrates 25 Years

Since 1990, the International Business Center has been educating and assisting businesses, public policy makers, academics, and students regarding international business and trade. More than 12,000 companies have benefitted from the IBC’s international trade assistance in the last decade. Recent IBC research has included a look at the value marketing adds to supply chains, a comparison of U.S. and Chinese innovation, and documentation of how companies can succeed during a global economic crisis.

The School Wins Best Homecoming Spartan Spirit

For the fourth year in a row, The School of Hospitality Business earned the “Best Spartan Spirit” Award in MSU’s Homecoming Parade. The School has won top parade awards 11 times in the past 13 years.

Executive Development Program Coaches Women for Highest Workplace Achievements

Executive Leadership for Women, an alumna-led program, helps women develop key skills that can lead to business success. Attendees are mentored in areas such as negotiations, executive voice, self-promotion, resilience, and network building.

Kids Allowed to Be Kids Make Better Parents

New research finds that mothers who took on burdensome caregiving roles as children – and weren’t allowed to just “be kids” – tend to be less sensitive and responsive to their own children’s needs. The findings suggest these parents do not understand appropriate child development and end up parenting in a harmful manner similar to that in which they were raised.
