Her Tenure

Judith Whipple joined the Broad College in 2006 as an associate professor in the Department of Supply Chain Management. She was promoted to professor in 2014 and became the Donald J. Bowersox and Robert W. Thull Professor in Logistics and Supply Chain Management in 2020.

As an award-winning scholar and teacher with extensive experience in the classroom, Whipple has taught at every level, from undergraduate students to Full-Time and Executive MBA students to doctoral candidates. In addition, she served as the faculty director of the college’s M.S. in Supply Chain Management program from 2018 to 2022.

Whipple has been recognized for her excellence in teaching with the MSU Teacher Scholar Award and the Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals Educators Conference Teaching Innovation Award.

She first came to Michigan State University in 1998 as an associate professor in the Department of Agricultural Economics and director of the Food Industry Management program. Previously, she was a faculty member at Western Michigan University and worked at General Motors Corporation in Lansing.

Her Research

Whipple’s research is focused on supply chain integration and collaboration. She has been published in numerous logistics, supply chain and marketing journals, including the Journal of Business Logistics, Journal of Supply Chain Management, Journal of Operations Management and Production and Operations Management Journal.

Her work has received various best paper awards, including the Bernard J. La Londe Best Paper Award of the Journal of Business Logistics in 2005 and 2010 (she was a finalist for the award in 2020) and the Journal of Operations Management Jack Meredith Best Paper of the Year in 2011. In addition, she was selected as a DC Velocity Rainmaker for her contributions to the field of supply chain management.

Whipple is well reputed among business professionals and supply chain industry practitioners. She has given hundreds of presentations and trainings at international and national meetings and conferences and for companies like Amway, General Dynamics, Kellogg’s, Meijer, Parker Hannifin and Steelcase.

She serves on the board of directors of the Institute for Supply Management and formerly served on the board of directors of the Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals, previously chairing its Research Strategies Committee and co-chairing its Supply Chain Innovation Award.

Whipple received her doctorate in marketing and logistics from Michigan State University and a bachelor of science from General Motors Engineering and Management Institute.
