Living in East Lansing
Michigan State University, a world-class educational institution of 45,000 students, is located in East Lansing, Michigan, itself a community of 50,000 people. A few miles away is the Michigan State Capitol building, in neighboring Lansing, Michigan, and within two hours, you can drive east and be in Detroit, Michigan's largest urban area, or drive west to sunbathe on the scenic shores of Lake Michigan.
East Lansing is a mix of small-town charm and cosmopolitan diversity and sophistication. With nightlife, shopping, dining, churches, and coffee houses within walking distance to campus, the city's amenities exceed its size. It's a community of close-knit neighborhoods, excellent public schools, extensive parks, and exceptional recreational facilities.
Bus service is provided on campus by the Capital Area Transportation Authority (CATA). CATA operates fixed routes that serve all University apartments, residence halls, commuter lots, and the main campus 7 days a week from 6am till 10pm during fall and spring semesters. CATA is also the public transportation provider for the greater Lansing area and provides direct service to off-campus apartments in East Lansing, Lansing, and surrounding communities year-round.
