Career Gallery 2009 still healthy in a down economy
Michigan State University students will meet recruiters from some of the world’s most prestigious corporations October 7-8 during the annual Career Gallery event at the Breslin Center. Organizers say that despite the down economy, the hiring environment for many companies is on par with last year’s numbers.
According to Kelly Bishop, MSU’s executive director of Career Services and Placement, the goal of this mega event is give both prospective employers and students a wider view of an increasingly multidisciplinary workforce.
"Certainly large corporations need to hire accountants as well as chemists and engineers. Our students also need to see the breadth of employment opportunity that may be available to them, regardless of their major," he says.
This is the sixth year that several campus career fairs have been combined into one, all-encompassing event, and it’s now an MSU tradition. It features the Science, Engineering & Technology Exchange on Wednesday, October 7, and the Business Exchange on Thursday, October 8.
"We’re very satisfied with the number of employers participating in this year’s events given the state of the economy," says Geoff Humphrys, director of the Broad School’s Lear Career Services Center. "We also know that we’ll have many students, as well as alumni, in job-seeking mode, so it’s important to fully engage them in the process. There are lots of events and activities all over campus that help create the hype for Career Gallery."
