Broad College career exploration conference introduces big data opportunities

Michigan State University’s Eli Broad College of Business is hosting a career exploration conference focused on jobs and internships in big data.

Scheduled for September 18, 2014, 12:30–4 p.m. at Spartan Stadium’s Huntington Club, “The Face of Analytics” is geared toward students interested in learning more about educational and career opportunities in data analytics—students with majors including business, economics, computer science, statistics, mathematics, engineering, and the sciences are recommended to attend. Admission is free and open to all, but registration is strongly encouraged.

The event will present a panel discussion on career opportunities and trends in big data management featuring industry experts from such well-known firms as Steelcase and Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan.

This dialogue will be followed by a business analytics career fair showcasing leading regional and international companies that employ professionals who manage and interpret data. Employers scheduled to be in attendance include Accident Fund, Akebono Brake Corporation, Alliance Data, Apple, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan, Chainalytics, Conagra Foods, Ducker Worldwide, Ford Credit, Johnson & Johnson, Kohls, Lowe Campbell-Ewald, Meritor, Michigan Farm Bureau, Michigan Lottery, Robert W. Baird, Siemens, Sogeti USA, Steelcase, and the United States Postal Service.

“The Face of Analytics will introduce the wide spectrum of careers available to graduates with the skills to handle big data,” said Betsey Voorhees, program director for the master’s in business analytics. “It will be a great place for students and potential students to explore ways to use their analytical skills and additional training they might seek to develop their potential.”

Throughout the event, representatives from the Broad College of Business will be available to discuss the master’s program in business analytics. This one-year program prepares students to extract useful information from large data sets and use it to solve practical business problems. The program mixes courses in data mining, applied statistics, and project management with hands-on projects working with major corporations. Applications are currently being accepted for the program for a January 2015 start.
