2014 Lewis Quality of Excellence Award recipients recognized

The 2014 winners of the Lewis Quality of Excellence Awards have been named. The winning projects are Executive Development Programs’ The Business of Music, the Department of Supply Chain Management’s Contracts Special Course, and the Lear Corporation Career Services Center’s International Corporate Tour.

The Business of Music is a course developed through collaboration between Broad’s Executive Development Programs and the College of Music. The class, available to both graduate and undergraduate students, reviews revenue-generating opportunities in the music industry and walks students through the process of building and pitching a business plan for a for-profit or nonprofit start-up. Susan Convery, professor of practice in accounting, and Keith Niblett, assistant director of Executive Development Programs, were honored for this program.

The Contracts Special Course was a one-credit class that focused on contracting and contract management—a very helpful topic for students pursuing careers in procurement and sourcing. The course was taught by purchasing and legal staff from GE Aviation in Grand Rapids with considerable experience in the field. Judy Jacobs, director of corporate and student relations for the Department of Supply Chain Management, was honored for spearheading this course.

International Corporate Tours bring students into actual global work environments, providing exposure to a range of industries, work settings, and cultures while helping them develop professional skills, identify their talents, clarify their interests, and strengthen teamwork competencies. The overall experience provides a unique experiential learning opportunity. The Lear Corporation Career Services Center was recognized for this program.

The Lewis Quality Awards recognize students, staff, and faculty members of the Eli Broad College of Business who have excelled in advancing the mission of the college through their achievements in continuous improvement and innovation. These awards were established by Michael J. and Marietta F. Kelly in honor of Richard J. Lewis, former dean of the Eli Broad College of Business. An endowment provides the revenue for these annual monetary awards, administered by the Broad College Alumni Association Board.

The awards were presented at the faculty meeting held September 12, 2014.
