Broad student-athletes recognized for high academic achievements

Two Broad College of Business students earned top awards at the 18th annual Student-Athlete Support Services Spartan Academic Excellence Gala April 13 at the Breslin Center. The athletes were joined by 50 additional students from the Broad College recognized at the gala.

Golfer Jenny Sritragul (BA Finance ’15) received the President’s Award for the female senior athlete with the highest cumulative grade point average (GPA). Her accolades are numerous; in addition to her 3.94 cumulative GPA and President’s Award, she has earned:

  • 2014 MSU Women’s Gold Tom Anderson Academic Award
  • 2013 Big Ten Distinguished Scholar
  • 2013 Big Ten Academic All-Big Ten
  • Dean’s List every semester at MSU
  • Two-time Spartan Academic Excellence
  • Gala Scholar-Athlete Award

Twice chosen for the NGCA All-Scholar Team, Sritragul is also a two-year letter winner for golf and a member of the Beta Gamma Sigma Academic Honor Society, Golden Key International Honor Society, Honors College, and National Society of Collegiate Scholars. She also served on the Thai Student Association, Spartan March Band Concert for Kids, and Relay for Life, among others.

Sritragul is joined in her achievement of top honors by Joe Cox (BA Accounting ’17), who earned the Harold & Raynor Shnider Office of the Provost Award, given to freshman or sophomore student-athletes with high academic performance, community involvement, and leadership abilities. In addition to having a 3.837 GPA and the Provost Award, Cox’s achievements are:

  • Two-year letter winner for hockey
  • 2014-15 alternate captain
  • 2015 Academic All-Big Ten
  • Big Ten First Star of Week—December 16, 2014
  • 2014 MSU Hockey Outstanding Rookie Award
  • Appeared in all 36 games as a freshman

Michelle Dear, a finance sophomore and soccer player who appeared with three other student-athletes to sing the national anthem at this year’s NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Championship Final Four, was recognized for Entertainment. She has also performed the national anthem at MSU soccer games. In addition to her musical talent, Dear earned highest honor for a GPA of 3.75-4.00.

Other Broad students who are at least a sophomore and maintain a minimum of one varsity letter and a 3.0 or better cumulative GPA also received Scholar-Athlete Awards.
