Financial Markets Institute (FMI) scholars Michelle Dear (BA Finance ’17) and Brian Winterfield (BA Finance ’17) are being honored with the Auto-Owners Insurance Champions in the Classroom Award for the 2015–16 academic year. This award is presented to one male and one female student-athlete each semester in recognition of their accomplishments in academics, leadership, and community outreach.
A member of the women’s soccer team, Dear was named the female Auto-Owners award recipient for Fall Semester 2015. She has also been awarded an Athletics Endowment Scholarship and named a Big Ten Distinguished Scholar as well as a member of the All-Big Ten Academic Team. She was chosen by her teammates to represent them on MSU’s Student Athlete Advisory Committee and serves on its Outreach Committee. Dear was selected as MSU’s representative to join a student-athlete from each of the other NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Final Four teams in singing the national anthem in Indianapolis in April 2015.
Winterfield is a starter on the men’s soccer team and serves on its leadership board. He was recognized in Fall Semester 2014 as one of only 26 Big Ten student-athletes with a perfect 4.0 GPA for the semester. Winterfield was named a Big Ten Distinguished Scholar and a member of the All-Big Ten Academic Team. He was also selected by his teammates to represent them on the Student Athlete Advisory Committee, which informs and advises MSU’s athletic directors on issues affecting student-athletes. Winterfield was named the male Auto-Owners Champion in the Classroom award recipient for Spring Semester 2016.
Both student-athletes have accepted investment banking internships in New York for summer 2016. Winterfield is joining Stifel Financial Corp., and Dear has accepted an offer from Bank of America Merrill Lynch.
