Perseverance, Passion, and Now, Prestige: MSUFCU CEO, April Clobes

By Hally Darnell

If you are an account holder at Michigan State Federal Credit Union (MSUFCU), you know that the world’s largest university-based credit union has the reputation of an organization you can put your confidence in. Based on the recent results of a top workplace survey, MSUFCU employees would have to agree; but not only are MSUFCU employees confident in the future of the company, but also in their CEO, April Clobes.

Clobes’ dedication and tenacity is one Michigan State University students can look to for inspiration, as her success story started in the same place where many students find themselves now: the Broad College of Business. After earning her undergraduate degree from Broad, Clobes went on to receive her master’s degree in advertising at Michigan State, and later, her MBA from Western Michigan University.

Sitting in a desk in a classroom, Dean of the Broad College of Business Sanjay Gupta and President of MSU Federal Credit Union April Clobes judge the Financial Literacy competition.
Clobes remains committed to the Broad College of Business. Alongside Dean Sanjay Gupta, she judged the first Financial Literacy competition in 2016.

Today, Clobes serves on the Broad College of Business Alumni Board, and remains very involved with the MSU community.

Alongside other high ratings, Clobes received higher ratings than any other executive in regards to employees having confidence in their companies’ leaders. In response, employee-focused Clobes said, “this ranking means the world to me.” That’s why on Tuesday, November 15, 2016 at the Detroit Marriott Troy, Clobes will be presented with the 2016 Detroit Free Press Top Workplaces Leadership Award.

The key to her success: passion and perseverance. “I’ve worked here for 20 years. I started here, I’ve grown up with the organization,” said Clobes, who joined the credit union in 1996 as a marketing specialist. “I’m passionate about what we do. I’m dedicated to this place — and I think people see that.”

When it comes to advice for future executives, “employees need to build a resume of skills and work well with team members and managers throughout their careers,” said Clobes, who encourages her employees to embrace changes in the industry. “I tell all of our employees that every day is a job interview.”

Along with receiving the prestigious award, Clobes will serve as the keynote speaker at the ceremony. To purchase tickets to the event click here.
