Network with Broad Alumni in California

Alumni in the San Francisco Bay area are invited to join fellow Spartans and special guest Sanjay Gupta, associate dean for MBA and professional master’s programs, for camaraderie, appetizers, and drinks at MSU After Work. The networking reception will be held Wednesday, April 24, from 5-7 p.m. at Park Place Restaurant and Bar in the Cypress Hotel in Cupertino, California. Registration Open for Broad Executive Forum of Chicago

Registration is now open for the Broad Executive Forum of Chicago, scheduled for Wednesday, May 15, at the University Club of Chicago. Don’t miss this chance to hear from special guest speaker Mark Hollis, MSU’s athletic director, who will share insights into the business and leadership side of Division I athletics. The event will also feature a mini-session and interactive panel discussion on high impact leadership presented by instructors from the college’s Executive Development Programs. Alumni Association Hosts Green & White Event in Boston

The MSU Alumni Association will host a Green & White Evening in Boston on May 7 at the Gillette World Shaving Headquarters as part of a series of alumni events across the country. The Broad College’s Sanjay Gupta, associate dean for MBA and professional master’s programs, will discuss “Challenges of the Current Economic Environment and the Impact on Higher Education.” A reception begins at 6 p.m. followed Dr. Gupta’s presentation at 7 p.m. Read more and register.

Spring Alumni Board Meeting Held in Austin

The Broad College Alumni Board of Directors held its spring meeting March 21–22 in Austin, Texas. An alumni event was held Thursday, March 21, with more than 65 alumni from the area attending. Friday’s board meeting was held at the IBM campus. Board members heard updates on projects and activities at the college from Dean Stefanie Lenway and Associate Dean Sanjay Gupta. They also heard a presentation from Manoj Saxena (MBA Marketing ’91), general manager of IBM Watson Solutions, about his work to commercialize IBM Watson, the computer best known for winning “Jeopardy.” The meeting ended with a tour the IBM Watson Solutions Lab. The next board meeting will be held in October in East Lansing.

MBA Student Rings Closing Bell on NASDAQ

NASDAQSecond-year MBA student Suyash Jain was part of a group of MBA students from around the world who rang the NASDAQ closing bell in Times Square on Wednesday, April 3. The opportunity came from Suyash’s participation in the Global Asset Management Education (GAME) III Forum, held April 4–6 in New York. The conference offered opportunities for college students and faculty to interact with industry leaders and learn best practices in investment management. MBA students Manav Garg and Upinderjit (Jeet) Chopra also attended the forum.

Undergrad Program Jumps Eight Spots in Businessweek Ranking

The Broad College’s undergraduate business program moved up eight places to #43 in the 2013 Businessweek rankings. Among public institutions, the college ranked #18, up from #21 last year. In addition, the recruiter ranking jumped one place to #12 (#7 among publics) and the college received top letter grades in the areas of job placement and facilities and services. Students Inducted into Beta Gamma Sigma

More than 50 undergraduate and graduate students from the Broad College were inducted into the international honor society Beta Gamma Sigma on March 25 during a ceremony at the Wharton Center’s Jackson Lounge. Beta Gamma Sigma is the highest recognition a business student can receive in an academic program at a college accredited by AACSB-International. To be eligible, students must rank in the top 10 percent of the undergraduate class or in the top 20 percent of their graduate program. Read more and view a list of the inductees.

2nd Annual MBA Business Plan Competition Held

The second annual Broad MBA Business Plan Competition was held Saturday, March 23, at the Wharton Center with a team of Weekend MBA students taking the top prize. The group won $5,000 for their business plan for On-SITE Oil Change Company, a concept to bring oil change service directly to the customer. Second place and $2,500 went to a team of first-year Full-Time MBA students for the concept SEVA, meaning “to help” in Hindi, which will improve efficiency in India’s agricultural supply chain. Judges for the competition included several Broad alumni. Read more about the competition.

MSU Launches Statewide Impact Site

MSU has launched a new website to highlight the university’s positive impact on the state of Michigan. MI Spartan Impact documents MSU’s collaborative efforts with businesses, hospitals, schools, and communities around Michigan and includes statewide data and regional contact information. Commencement Speakers Announced

Emmy Award-winning actor Tim Busfield and best-selling author Richard Ford will speak at MSU’s spring commencement May 3. Busfield will speak to undergraduates at the 1 p.m. convocation, which will be held at Jack Breslin Student Events Center. Later in the day, Ford will address advanced degree candidates, also in the Breslin Center. On May 4, Manoj Saxena (MBA Marketing ’91), general manager of IBM Watson Solutions, will address Broad College students at the college commencement ceremony at 4 p.m. in the Breslin Center, and Matt Barnhill (MBA Marketing ’04), executive vice president of corporate market research at BET Networks, will speak at a luncheon for graduates of the Full-Time MBA Program.
