2013 Alumna Wins 64GB iPad Mini in Alumni Community Drawing

Kelsey Phipps (BA ’13 supply chain management) was the winner in a random drawing of the nearly 7,000 alumni records that were activated in the Broad College Online Community in the past year. The sign-up promotion ran from August 1, 2012 to August 1, 2013. You can still join the community.

Tailgate Season Kicks Off August 30

Are you coming to MSU for this fall’s home football games? If so, join us at Broad College pre-game tailgates, starting with the season’s first game August 30 when the Spartans take on the Western Michigan Broncos. Look for the Broad College tent, flutter flags, and the giant inflatable Sparty figure along Red Cedar Road, near the southeast corner of the stadium. There’s no charge and no RSVP is required. 2nd Annual Broad College Scholarship Luncheon Set for September 27

Alumni, friends, and corporate sponsors of more than 75 scholarship funds specifically for Broad College students will soon receive invitations to attend the 2nd Annual Broad Scholarship Luncheon on September 27 at the Wharton Center. Nearly 450 undergraduate and graduate students receive Broad-specific financial assistance. Many of them will be in attendance and paired at the luncheon with the people and companies who have helped to support their education. Keynote speakers for the event are Dave Dutch (MBA ’97) and John Maguire (MBA ’96), whose 2011 gifts funded the Endowed Scholarship for U.S. Armed Forces.

Cichy Stepping Down as Director of The School

After more than 25 years as director of The School of Hospitality Business, Ronald Cichy will step down from the position in August 2014 to pursue research and other projects. “I have been happy to devote myself to our school for so many years,” said Cichy. “Now is a good time for me to step aside and let younger leadership take The School to the 100th anniversary of this educational treasure.” Cichy has been instrumental in guiding The School to the prominent position it holds today. Professor’s Research Finds Unattractive Workers Treated More Harshly

Broad-led research revealed that people who are considered unattractive are more likely to be belittled and bullied at work, and likewise, disagreeable workers were treated more harshly. “Although we like to think we’re professional and mature in the workplace, it can be just like high school in many ways,” said Brent Scott, associate professor of management. His research was covered widely in the media, including Businessweek, the Washington Post, and Forbes. More about the research

The School Presents 2013 Lifetime Academic Achievement Award

Ray Schmidgall (MBA ’69, PhD ’80), Hilton Hotels Professor of Hospitality Financial Management for The School of Hospitality Business, was awarded The School’s 2013 Lifetime Academic Achievement Award in a ceremony held at the I-CHRIE annual conference in St. Louis, Missouri, on July 25. Schmidgall has taught hospitality business accounting and finance classes in The School for 38 years, authoring seven editions of Hospitality Industry Managerial Accounting and more than 250 academic and industry articles.

MSU Alumni Are More Successful, More Prolific Business Owners

New research shows that graduates of MSU, the University of Michigan, and Wayne State University have started or acquired businesses at double the national average rate among college graduates since 1996. The study by the University Research Corridor also showed these grads were 1.5 times as successful as the average U.S. business owner at keeping those startups and acquisitions alive over the past five years. Football Fans: Come Meet the Spartan Team

Michigan State fans are invited to attend the 11th annual “Meet the Spartans” event, held August 13, 5–8 p.m. in Spartan Stadium. MSU head coach Mark Dantonio and members of the 2013 football team will be available for autographs. More about the Spartans

MSU Hosts World Dwarf Games

The 2013 World Dwarf Games are going on August 3–10 at MSU, where they were launched 30 years ago. More than 400 athletes from 23 nations and every U.S. state are competing in the games, held every four years, making this the largest-ever sporting event exclusively for athletes with dwarfism.
