Tailgate Season Kicks Off August 29

Are you coming to MSU for this fall’s home football games? If so, join us at the Broad College’s pre-game tailgates:

  • October 4: Nebraska Cornhuskers

Look for the Broad College tent, flutter flags, and the giant inflatable Sparty figure along Red Cedar Road, near the southeast corner of the stadium. There’s no charge and no RSVP is required.

West Coast Tailgate before MSU vs. Oregon Game

Join fellow Spartans at the MSU Alumni Association’s pre-game tailgate at the MSU vs. Oregon football game September 6 in Eugene, Oregon. The Broad College is sponsoring the tailgate, scheduled from 1–2:30 p.m. PT, which will feature food and drink, music, and fun! Reserve your tailgate tickets now.

Knutson Recognized with 2014 Lifetime Academic Achievement Award

Bonnie Knutson, professor of hospitality business, was recognized with The School of Hospitality Business Alumni Association’s 2014 Lifetime Academic Achievement Award on July 31 at the annual MSU alumni breakfast held in San Diego, California. The award recognizes her lifetime academic achievements and leadership in industry and academic thought.

New Director of The School Named


Michael McCall has been named director of The School of Hospitality Business, effective January 1, 2015. He is chair of the Department of Marketing and Law and a professor at the Ithaca College School of Business. He is also a visiting scholar and research fellow at the Center for Hospitality Research in the School of Hotel Administration at Cornell University. Michael will succeed Ron Cichy, who is stepping down on August 15, after serving as director of The School since 1988. Bonnie Knutson, professor of hospitality business, will serve as acting director of The School, effective August 16.

Executive-Style MBA Announces 50th Anniversary, Name Change

The executive-style MBA is celebrating a 50-year milestone this year. Since 1964, the program has been transforming high potential into high performance. In recognition of this heritage and to position the program for continued success, our executive-style Weekend MBA will now be known as the Eli Broad College of Business Executive MBA. The program remains committed to offering a premier educational experience and continuing to build on the foundation that has helped more than 4,000 alumni achieve their goals.

Broad Launches Online Graduate Certificates in Human Resources, Leadership, and Management

The Broad College has introduced three new for-credit graduate certificates in human resource management and development, leadership and managing teams, and strategic management. The programs include select courses from the master of science in management, strategy, and leadership program, and credits earned in the certificate programs can later be applied toward the master’s degree.

Analytics Career Conference September 18

The master’s in business analytics program is sponsoring its annual career exploration event and job fair September 18 at the Huntington Club in Spartan Stadium. A panel will discuss careers and trends in big data management, followed by a career fair showcasing companies that employ professionals who manage and interpret big data. “The Face of Analytics” is free and open to all.

Sportscaster Alumna Named Homecoming Grand Marshal

MSU alumna Jemele Hill will serve as the grand marshal for the university’s Homecoming celebrations, to be held September 22–27. She has worked for ESPN since 2006.

Homecoming Court Features Broad Seniors

MSU’s 2014–15 Homecoming Court includes three Broad seniors. Jason Murray (BA Human Resource Management ’14), Sarah Noffze (BA Marketing ’14), and D’Andra Sanders (BA Hospitality Business ’14) will serve as court ambassadors. Court members began representing MSU at events this summer and will continue their commitment throughout the school year, especially during Homecoming week.

President Simon Meets with Student Entrepreneurs

A recent lunch with President Simon highlighted 10 startups that students are advancing while on campus. Many of them are part of The Hatch, MSU’s student business incubator.
