Tailgate Season Kicks Off September 12

If you are attending this fall’s MSU home football games, join us at the Broad College’s pre-game tailgates:

Look for the Broad College tent, flutter flags, and the giant inflatable Sparty figure along Red Cedar Road, near the southeast corner of the stadium. There’s no charge and no RSVP is required.

School Presents Lifetime Award

On July 30, Sara Parks (MBA ’70) was honored with the Lifetime Academic Achievement Award of the Alumni Association of The School of Hospitality Business. Among other achievements, she directed what is now known as the School of Hospitality Management at Pennsylvania State University. The presentation took place during the 2015 International Council on Hotel, Restaurant and Institutional Education (ICHRIE) Conference.

Registration Now Open for 50th Anniversary Detroit Executive Forum

Registration has opened for the MSU Detroit Executive Forum (formerly Broad Executive Forum of Detroit). The event, 5–8 p.m., Wednesday, September 23, is a collaboration of alumni from the Broad College of Business and the MSU College of Engineering as well as the Metro Detroit Spartan Alumni. Enjoy networking with fellow metro Detroit Spartans and keynote appearances by Mark Hollis and Tom Izzo. Attendance is open to all Spartans, their clients, and their colleagues.

Helping the White House Expand Business Opportunities for Women

The Broad College is working with the White House and other major business schools and companies to expand opportunities for women in business. At a White House event last week, Broad and other business schools committed to a set of best practices and tangible actions to pursue this goal.

Broad Researcher Shows How Electricity Usage Predicts Stock Market

A finance professor has recently published research demonstrating how electricity usage can be used to predict stock market movements. Under normal conditions, a “countercyclical risk premium” causes increases in electricity usage to correspond to declines in stock market measures.

Midland Research Institute Moves Forward

The Midland Research Institute for Value Chain Creation (MRIVCC) has moved forward, as it approaches its second birthday: hiring an executive director, launching the new value chain creation track for the master’s in supply chain management, defining its research strategy, and planning the second annual MRIVCC Summit. The September 10–11 summit will draw experts and thought leaders in value chain creation for a discussion in Midland, Michigan.

Tuesday: Meet the Spartans

The 13th annual Meet the Spartans event for football fans of all ages is 4:30–8 p.m., Tuesday, August 18, in Spartan Stadium. Coach Dantonio and members of the 2015 football team will be available for autographs and some photo and behind-the-scenes opportunities will be available.

MSU Welcomes Its First Undergraduate Entrepreneurship Director

Neil KaneExperienced entrepreneur, business executive, and Forbes contributor Neil Kane has been named the university’s first director of undergraduate entrepreneurship. This “Technology Pioneer” (as named by the World Economic Forum) was recognized for outstanding entrepreneurship by the National Science Foundation. He will work closely with MSU’s colleges and existing entrepreneurship efforts across campus.

Spartans Participate in College Colors Challenge

MSU is participating in the inaugural College Colors Challenge and encouraging fan support for the Spartans. This new contest celebrates the excitement of college football through a series of photo and video challenges on social media. Fans can flaunt their colors, express their school spirit, and vie for an all-expenses paid trip to the College Football Playoff National Championship game.

Brain Game Reduces Anxiety by Easing Distraction

Researchers have created a surprisingly simple yet targeted brain game that reduces anxiety by helping people focus in an increasingly distracting world. In an MSU-led study, the game’s focusing task improved concentration and lessened anxiety among anxious individuals.
