The School of Hospitality Business inducted four new members into its Alumni Association Hall of Fame and honored its 2016 Industry Leader of the Year at the Celebration of Leadership November 12. More than 200 alumni, students, faculty, and industry friends gathered to honor new hall of famers John Belden (BA ’85), president and CEO of Davidson Hotels & Resorts; John Flood (BA ’80), vice president and general manager, Prepared Foods, Wayne Farms; James Kauffman (BA ’75), retired president, U.S. and Canada Full Service Hotels for Marriott International, Inc.; and Steve Wagenheim (BA ’77), co-founder and partner with Genuine Restaurant Group. Industry Leader of the Year Steve Joyce is the CEO of Choice Hotels International, one of the world’s largest hotel franchisors. ![]() Bloomberg Businessweek Ranks Broad Full-Time MBA among Top 10 Public ProgramsThe Broad Full-Time MBA ranked no. 10 among public universities and no. 27 overall in the latest Bloomberg Businessweek ranking. Former School of Hospitality Business Director Passes AwayDonald Smith, who served as director of the School of Hotel, Restaurant and Institutional Management from 1980 to 1983, died on Tuesday, November 29, at the age of 89. Known as “Coach,” Don had been a football coach as well as an independent restaurateur, restaurant chain executive, distinguished professor, hospitality industry leader and consultant, award-winning manager, and tireless educator. Broad #1 Public B-School in Finding Undergrads Jobs Quickly after GraduationIn the Poets & Quants inaugural ranking of undergraduate business programs, Broad ranked first among public universities and second among all schools for the percentage of students reporting job acceptances by 90 days after graduation. The college was ranked no. 19 among public universities and no. 38 overall. Ranked schools are among the top seventh percentile of all schools accredited by the AACSB. ![]() MSU Foundation Launches Venture FundRed Cedar Ventures, a new $5 million venture investing subsidiary of the MSU Foundation, will overcome early funding gaps, accelerate growth, and provide growth-stage capital for MSU-based business startups and technologies. Broad College student venture analysts will assist an advisory board of leading venture capitalists from across the nation.
The Sports Turf Managers Association named Spartan Stadium the top collegiate football field for 2016. It is one of only four fields to earn the distinction twice since the award was created in 1992. Greater Income Inequality Lowers Satisfaction with DemocracyVoter satisfaction with democracy may have less to do with who wins an election and more to do with income inequality, a new study indicates. As the gap between rich and poor grows, the poor intensify their demand for the redistribution of wealth, while the rich become more anxious about the possibility of losing income. MSU Data Breach Exposed RecordsOn November 13, an unauthorized party gained access to an MSU server containing certain sensitive data (names, social security numbers, MSU identification numbers, and in some cases date of birth) for some present and past students and employees. The affected database was taken offline within 24 hours of the unauthorized access, and the MSU Police Department is working diligently with federal law enforcement partners to investigate the crime.
