Celebration Honors Young Alum, Faculty Member

Broad leadership joined United Shore Financial Services at its metro Detroit offices January 31 to present United Shore President and CEO Mat Ishbia (BA General Management ’03) with the Broad College’s Young Alumni Award. The event also celebrated the investiture of Douglas Hughes, associate professor of marketing and interim department chairperson, as the United Shore Faculty Fellow in Sales Leadership.

Destination Auction Coming Soon

The School of Hospitality Business will host its major annual fundraising event, Destination Auction, on Saturday, February 25, at the Kellogg Center, with a silent auction starting at 5 p.m. and a live auction at 6 p.m. The event auctions a variety of experiences and memorabilia donated by generous alumni and supporters to support the student Hospitality Association, the HB Alumni Association, and two local charities.

Speaker Series Shares Entrepreneurship Insights

The spring semester Innovate State Speaker Series brings MSU alumni entrepreneurs to speak about their experiences on campus, such as Alexandra Clark (BA Hospitality Business ’10) of Bon Bon Bon and Marc Colcer (BA Management ’14) of Wear Your Threads and the Marc Colcer Management Group. Upcoming speakers are:

  • February 27 – Sarah Kunst, founder and CEO of
  • March 21 – Ben Hatala, COO of Clicktivated
  • March 28 – Lauren Aitch, co-owner of Our Own Products and Lady Aitch Designs, president of Aitch Foundation
  • April 6* – Brett Kopf, co-founder of Remind
  • April 18 – Pat Gillespie, president of Gillespie Group

All are welcome to attend. Pizza is provided, and public parking is available nearby. Each event will be held 6–8 p.m. at the MSU Innovation Center, except for Brett Kopf’s talk, which will be held in N100 BCC.

Alumna Cooks through “Hell,” Emerges Victorious

Kimberly Ryan (BA Hospitality Business ’08), chef at Alliance Restaurant in Traverse City, competed in the most recent season of culinary competition reality series Hell’s Kitchen. She emerged as the season 16 champion, winning $250,000 and a head chef position at Yardbird Southern Table and Bar at the Venetian Las Vegas.

Broad FTMBA Ranks among Top 10 U.S. Public Programs in Latest Financial Times Ranking

Financial Times 2017 Global MBA RankingThe Financial Times has released its 2017 ranking of full-time MBA programs worldwide. Broad’s MBA ranked No. 58 globally, No. 22 among all U.S. programs, and No. 10 among U.S. public universities.

Faculty Awarded Fulbright Scholarships

Two Broad professors of supply chain management were selected to receive Fulbright Chair awards. These prestigious awards provide the opportunity to lecture and conduct research internationally.

Senior Gift Becomes Fundraising Competition

Each year, Broad graduating seniors support a cause at MSU as their Senior Class Gift. This year, they will compete to raise funds for the Business Pavilion. Students, along with alumni, faculty, and friends, will rally behind their academic departments to see which can reach (or exceed) the goal of $1,000 per department.

Myya Donnella JonesBroad Senior Named to NBCBLK28, Running for Mayor of Detroit

Myya Jones (BA Management ’17) has been named to the 2017 NBCBLK28, a nationwide group of African-American innovators and pioneers 28 years of age and younger honored by NBC News. She has been working relentlessly to prepare herself for her goal, for which she is now running: the mayorship of Detroit.

To open the 2017 North American International Auto Show, Dean Sanjay Gupta of the Broad College and Dean Leo Kempel of the MSU College of Engineering toured General Motors auto showcases and production facilities with executives to see alumni innovation at work. During the two-week auto show, MSU hosted a reception to celebrate its commitment to Detroit, with an insider’s look at MSU’s impact on—and future in—the auto industry.

EmpowHER Retreat Registration Open

The second annual empowHER Retreat will be held April 28–29 at the Breslin Center. EmpowHER was created to provide fifth through ninth grade girls from diverse backgrounds with the tools to find confidence, passion, and purpose. The retreat, founded by MSU women’s basketball coach Suzy Merchant and the Broad College of Business, hosted 150 young girls in the first year and won the Broad College’s Lewis Quality of Excellence Award. This year’s goal: doubling enrollment to 300 girls.
