In December, 335 undergraduate and 125 graduate students graduated from the Broad College. John Duffey (BA Accounting ’82), president of Six Flags Entertainment Corp., served as the keynote speaker at the undergraduate commencement ceremony.
The School of Hospitality Business will host its major annual fundraising event, Destination Auction, on Saturday, February 25, at the Kellogg Center. The event auctions a variety of experiences and memorabilia donated by generous alumni and friends to support the student Hospitality Association, the HB Alumni Association, and two local charities. Alexandra Clark (BA Hospitality Business ’10) has been named “Best Young Pastry Chef in the World” by Forbes, as well as being honored on its list of “30 Under 30” for young professionals in the food and drink industry worldwide. Clark is the founder of Detroit-area sweet shop Bon Bon Bon.
By turning her passions for food, culture, and travel into her profession, Elizabeth Suvedi (BA Marketing ’01) veered her career from the corporate to the culinary, but she continues to be guided by the drive to achieve she honed at Broad. MS in Management, Strategy, and Leadership among Top 20 Online Business Degrees in Latest U.S. News Ranking
U.S. News & World Report ranked the Broad MS in Management, Strategy, and Leadership (MSMSL) no. 16 in its 2017 ranking of the best online business master’s programs. This is up 10 places from last year and nearly 50 places over three years.

New research by a Broad professor shows that stock market investor responses to product pre-announcements do not reliably predict how a new product will perform. Under certain conditions, however, short-term market reactions to these announcements become more reliable predictors of product performance.
The 2017 Student Startup Madness competition has announced its “starting field of 64,” and MSU has eight student entrepreneur groups represented—the most of any university in the competition. The competition focuses on college digital media startups and holds its final competition on stage at the South by Southwest (SXSW) conference.
An MSU researcher won a highly competitive $1 million grant from USAID to fight the Zika virus by building a “mosquito factory” in Mexico. The facility will breed mosquitoes infected with bacteria harmless to humans but which renders female mosquitoes sterile—reducing the population and the ability of mosquitoes to transmit diseases.
Gifts to MSU from current and former faculty and staff in fiscal year 2016 totaled the most in MSU’s history, the highest reported in the Big Ten, and the fourth-highest in the American Association of Universities. Outright gifts, pledges, in-kind gifts, and estate gifts reached almost $25 million as the fiscal year closed June 30.
