HB to Present Lifetime Achievement Award

The School of Hospitality Business Alumni Association will present its 2016 Lifetime Academic Achievement Award Thursday, July 21, at an award ceremony breakfast event held during the annual International Council on Hotel, Restaurant, and Institutional Education (I-CHRIE) summer conference in Grapevine, Texas. Pauline “Polly” W. Buchanan (MS Hospitality Business ‘80), associate professor emeritus in hotel and restaurant management at Eastern Michigan University, will be honored with the award. RSVP to Lena Loeffler by Thursday, July 14 to attend.

Several Broad Spartans are heading to Rio to compete in the 2016 Summer Olympic Games. Emily Regan (BA Hospitality Business ’10) will compete on the U.S. women’s rowing team, while Mohamed Hrezi (Full-Time MBA ’18) will represent Libya in the marathon as the country’s sole runner in all track and field events.

$4.5M Gift Supports Entrepreneurship

Bob BurgessLong-time college supporter Robert “Bob” K. Burgess (BS Packaging ’66) has made a gift of $4.5 million to the Institute for Entrepreneurship and Innovation, following a $2 million gift to the institute in 2005. In honor of his gifts and service, the institute will be renamed the Burgess Institute for Entrepreneurship and Innovation. The recent gift will be allocated equally to helping students compete in national and international business contests; recruiting and retaining talented instructors with significant business experience; and general activities and initiatives of the institute.

Top Mumbai Students Dive Deep at Broad

Students pursuing a post-graduate diploma in management at India’s no. 4 ranked business school have come to Broad for a new three-week immersion program June 26–July 15. The program focuses on supply chain innovation, analytics, and sustainability in the integrated value chain, with in-depth projects based on live Kelly Services corporate data that will be presented to the company’s board at the conclusion of the program.

Helping Co-Workers Can Wear You Out

Helping co-workers too often can lead to mental and emotional exhaustion and hurt job performance, a new Broad study suggests. Receiving thanks or becoming aware of the positive results of the help can minimize and possibly reverse these negative effects, the study indicated.

MD/MBA Dual Degree Launches

The College of Human Medicine and Broad College of Business will begin a Doctor of Medicine and Master of Business Administration joint degree in fall 2016. The MBA portion of the degree specializes in management, strategy, and leadership, providing foundational skills for organizational leadership. Common Food Additive Increasing Food Allergies?

An MSU researcher has found that common food additive tert-butylhydroquinone, or tBHQ, can cause an immune system’s T cells to release proteins that can trigger allergies to foods such as nuts, milk, eggs, wheat, and shell fish. This synthetic preservative is in many foods, where it is often not listed on the label.
