Ridwan Jimoh celebrates at commencement
More Than 1,500 Students Graduate

This semester, 1,086 undergraduate and 442 graduate students graduated from the Broad College. Entrepreneur Bob Skandalaris (BA Accounting ’74) and graduating senior Ridwan Jimoh (BA Supply Chain Management ’16) addressed graduates. Ten Broad seniors earned Board of Trustees’ Awards for a perfect 4.0 GPA. Annual Gathering of Leaders Honors Alumni

During the National Restaurant Association Show May 21–24 in Chicago, The School of Hospitality Business will hold its Annual Gathering of Leaders award ceremony and reception May 23, 6–8:30 p.m. at the Westin Chicago River North. Please join us as we recognize our 2016 honorees:

  • Alumnus of the Year: Peter J. Weien (BA ’81), vice president and market general manager, Gaylord Opryland Resort & Convention Center/Attractions
  • Honorary Alumnus of the Year: Grant DePorter, chief executive officer and managing director, Harry Caray’s Restaurant Group
  • Emerging Alumni Leader of the Year: Marc L. Cassier, Jr. (BA ’89), corporate executive director, conference services and catering, Fairmont Hotels & Resorts-Americas
  • Emerging Alumni Leader of the Year: Mary Winslow (BA ’91), vice president, group accounts, Luckie & Company

Bloomberg Businessweek: Top 10 Public B-School for Undergraduates

The Broad College of Business was ranked No. 20—No. 8 among public schools—in the Bloomberg Businessweek Best Undergraduate Schools 2016 ranking. This was up 22 spots from the college’s most recent position in the ranking. Recruiters ranked Broad among the nation’s top 15 business schools for the fifth consecutive ranking.

Student Entrepreneurs Win “Swim with the Sharks”

Two Broad juniors won a $10,000 prize for their startup Bringitt at “Swim with the Sharks,” a contest held during the National Automatic Merchandising Association (NAMA) OneShow in which students pitched to “Shark Tank” celebrity entrepreneur judges Lori Greiner and Robert Herjavec. Bringitt provides a peer-to-peer shipping network accessed through a mobile app.

FMI Celebrates 10 Years

The Financial Markets Institute (FMI) celebrates its 10-year anniversary this spring. FMI’s 119 graduated scholars have gone on to work in leading financial institutions on Wall Street and elsewhere.

Ocean Views Linked to Better Mental Health

New research suggests that residents with a view of the water are less stressed. Even after taking into account wealth, age, gender, and other neighborhood factors, the study found that having a view of the ocean was associated with improved mental health.

Innovating Homicide Investigations

A new study led by an MSU criminologist examines police departments that solve at least 80 percent of their homicide cases. These departments have evolved the role of homicide investigators and adopted advanced technologies such as digital forensics and crime analysis.

EmpowHER Retreat Inspires Michigan Teens

Suzy Merchant, MSU women’s basketball coach, joined forces with the Broad College to develop the EmpowHER retreat. EmpowHER reached 150 teenage girls from all backgrounds, developing their ability to find confidence, passion, and purpose and nurturing their skills in leadership, resiliency, relationship building, and more.
