Undergraduates celebrate at commencement
More Than 1,000 Broad Spartans Graduate

This past weekend, MSU commencements celebrated the 1,070 Broad College graduates turning their tassels and moving on as Spartan alumni. Todd Penegor (BA Accounting ’87, MBA Finance ’89), president and CEO of Wendy’s, and student speaker Aiden Wang (BA Accounting ’17) addressed Broad’s undergraduates.

Connect with Classmates at Alumni University

Registration is now open for Alumni University, previously known as Alumni Reunion Days. All Spartans from the classes of 1992 and earlier are invited to campus June 28–29 for this educational experience. Members of the Class of 1967, MSU’s 50-year class, will be honored at the Kedzie Reunion Luncheon on June 29.

Palmers Give $2M to Pavilion, Name New Career Management Center

Russell Palmer (BA Accounting ’56) and his wife Wendy are supporting the construction of the Business Pavilion with a $2 million gift, ensuring that business students have the resources to pursue their dream careers. The college will name the future home for its career management teams the Russell Palmer Career Management Center in honor of this gift.

MS in Accounting: Among Top 5 for Taxation Specialization

The MS in Accounting Program taxation specialization was ranked no. 4 in the 2017 Top in Tax Educational Survey by Tax Talent. The MS as a whole ranked eighth, continuing a trend of top-ten performance.

New Broad-led research indicates that you don’t need the charisma of Steve Jobs to be an effective leader. Bosses who were supportive and set clear expectations – but weren’t necessarily transformational leaders with grand visions – were able to effectively motivate their employees.

FMI Scholars Win William Blair Midwest Investment Banking Competition

A group of Financial Markets Institute sophomore scholars took first-place honors at William Blair’s Midwest Investment Banking Competition at the firm’s Chicago headquarters April 21. The judges complimented the students on their detailed analysis and professional presentation and selected them as the best in the field.

empowHER Retreat Supports Middle School Girls

The Broad College-sponsored second annual empowHER Leadership Retreat reached more than 300 fifth- through ninth-grade girls with help coping with the common challenges of social media, bullying, traitorous friends, and more. The event featured inspiration from a three-time Olympian who has navigated mental illness since her athletic successes.

The Dark Side of Helping Coworkers

If you show up at work tired, you may want to focus strictly on your own tasks. New research suggests helping coworkers in the morning can lead to mental exhaustion and self-serving behavior in the afternoon that ultimately can create a toxic work environment.
