“Transform Detroit” with Broad Executive Forum October 21
The 48th Annual Broad Executive Forum of Detroit will take place Monday, October 21, from 4–7:30 p.m. at the GEM and Century Theatres. The theme of this year’s event is “Transform Detroit.” An afternoon panel will discuss the business and property development needed to transform Detroit. Mary Barra, an executive vice president at GM and one of Fortune‘s 50 Most Powerful Women in Business, will deliver an evening keynote about transformation and culture change in large institutions such as the City of Detroit. Broad College Scholarship Luncheon Celebrates Donors, Alumni
The Broad College Scholarship Luncheon, held September 27, provided an opportunity for scholarship donors to connect with scholarship recipients and to be recognized for their support of higher education. The event featured keynote remarks by Dave Dutch (MBA Finance ’97) and John Maguire (MBA Finance ’96), who funded the Broad College Endowed Scholarship for U.S. Armed Forces. At the luncheon, this year’s Broad College Young Alumni Awards were also presented to Tania Chopra (BA Supply Chain Management ’03) and Ryan Sullivan (BA Finance ’06). More about the luncheon
MSUAA Hosts Green & White Evening in Phoenix
The MSU Alumni Association will host a Green & White Evening in Phoenix on Wednesday, November 13, at Sanctuary Camelback Mountain Resort and Spa as part of a series of alumni events across the country. The Broad College’s Sanjay Gupta, associate dean for MBA and professional master’s programs, will discuss “Challenges of the Current Economic Environment and the Impact on Higher Education.” A reception begins at 5:30 p.m., followed by Dean Gupta’s presentation at 6:30 p.m. Register.
Full-Time MBA Ranks among Top 10 Public Universities for ROI
In the Forbes biennial ranking released October 9, Broad’s Full-Time MBA Program was ranked 9th among public schools and 22nd overall. Since 2007, Forbes has consistently ranked Broad among the top 10 public institutions and the top 25 overall programs. Forbes bases its ranking wholly upon return on investment. Broad graduates needed just 3.3 years to make up the costs of their MBA degrees in additional compensation, Forbes calculated – the shortest period in the Big Ten. More about the ranking
Broad Launches Online Master’s in Management, Strategy, and Leadership
The Broad College is launching its first completely online master’s degree. The master of science in management, strategy, and leadership will teach students how to become transformational leaders—from motivating individuals and mobilizing teams to making strategic decisions and implementing long-term plans. Enrollment is underway and classes begin in January. More about the degree.
Research Finds Link between Materialism and Traumatic Stress
A Broad-led international study revealed that materialistic people experience more stress from traumatic events such as terrorist attacks and are more likely to spend compulsively as a result. “This compulsive and impulsive spending is likely to produce even greater stress and lower well-being,” said Ayalla Ruvio, assistant professor of marketing. “Essentially, materialism appears to make bad events even worse.” Ruvio’s research was covered broadly in the media, including U.S. News & World Report, ABC News Radio, and Health Magazine. Chrysler Exec Shares Vision for Auto Industry in Warrington Lecture
The 2013 Sylvan T. Warrington Visiting Lectureship in Ethics and Leadership welcomed Joseph Veltri (BA Accounting ’80), vice president of product planning for Chrysler Group LLC, to the Broad College on September 26. Veltri discussed Chrysler’s turnaround and shared his vision for the future of the auto industry.

Participate in 360.24 Documentary of a Day in the Life of Spartans
On November 6, shoot video or photos of the ordinary and extraordinary moments of your day and share them for use in the 360.24 video documentary, which will capture this day in the life of MSU alumni, students, faculty, and staff. New Munn Lights Increase Efficiency and Enhance Fan Experience
As part of a renovation of the Munn Ice Arena, LED lighting has been installed – making the arena one of the first ice rinks in the country to do so. The upgrade will cut Munn’s lighting-related energy costs by 80 percent. More about the lights
