MBA Alumni: Reconnect at BroadLink!

All Broad MBA alumni are invited to BroadLink 2014, an alumni-driven conference to be held Friday, November 7, 11:30 a.m.–8 p.m. in East Lansing. The event features a keynote speech by Dan Roam, author of The Back of the Napkin, and a conversation with Bob Chapek (MBA ’84), president of Disney Consumer Products, as well as presentations by corporate leaders and a networking reception at the Broad Museum. Alumni of the classes of ’14, ’04, ’94, ’84, ’74, and ’64 will have the opportunity to reconnect with their classmates reunion-style and be honored for their graduation anniversary. Stay the weekend and enjoy the Ohio State football game, if you wish. The event is expected to sell out early, so register today.

The School to Celebrate Leadership

The School of Hospitality Business will hold its annual Celebration of Leadership Awards at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in New York on Saturday, November 8. Dan E. Burdakin (BA ’81), Billy Downs (BA ’88), John F. Theuer (BA ’83, MBA ’83), and Ken Weber (BA ’77) will join the Hall of Fame, and S. Kirk Kinsell, president for the Americas of InterContinental Hotels Group, will be honored as the Industry Leader of the Year. Tickets are still available to the award ceremony and reception.

Broad Executive Forum of Detroit to Feature Analytics Panel

The 49th Broad Executive Forum of Detroit, to be held Thursday, October 23, will feature a panel of analytics professionals on “big data” trends and strategies, followed by a Q&A with the audience. Cheri Speier-Pero, professor of information systems and faculty director of the master’s in business analytics, will moderate the session, and panelists will include experts from Deloitte, General Motors, and Hewlett Packard.

College Award Winners Honored

The winners of the Broad College’s 2014 alumni awards have been named. Ryan Landau (BA Supply Chain Management ’10), CEO and co-founder of Chalkfly, will receive the Young Alumni Achievement Award at the Broad Executive Forum of Detroit. Susan Oaks (MBA Operations Management ’85), recently retired from A.T. Kearney, received the Lifetime Alumni Achievement Award during Homecoming festivities, surrounded by many supply chain alumni. Brian Van Elslander (BA Accounting ’87), managing director and head of the Financial Sponsors Group of Wells Fargo Securities, received the Outstanding Alumni Achievement Award during the FMI New York Road Show.

Scholarship Luncheon Honors Alumni, Corporate Donors

The third annual Broad College Scholarship Luncheon, held October 3, brought together the alumni, corporate, and other sponsors of more than 75 scholarship funds specifically for Broad College students with some of the nearly 450 undergraduate and graduate students who receive this support. Students had the opportunity to thank the donors for this educational support and also network with them, as they look forward to their postgraduate careers. Rob Spork (BA Accounting ’97), partner and portfolio manager at Regiment Capital Advisors, presented the keynote remarks, and Joseph Ajao (MBA ’15) shared his experiences as a MasterCard Foundation Scholar.

For the third year in a row, the Homecoming float developed by The School of Hospitality Business was named Best Spartan Spirit. The School has won 10 parade awards in the last 12 years: a tribute to the enthusiastic involvement of students, faculty, staff, and alumni.

International Business Center: Reaffirmed CIBER

The International Business Center has been reaffirmed as a Center for International Business Education and Research (CIBER) by the U.S. Department of Education in its 2014 grant competition. This designation was granted to 17 select universities to serve as national resources to increase global business competence.

Munn Ice Arena to Be Upgraded

Over the coming year, Munn Ice Arena will be renovated to enhance the fan and student-athlete experience. Upgrades will include new high-definition video boards and LED ribbon boards, chairback seating, theatrical lighting, and new décor for concourses and dressing rooms.

Parents Drive Their Children’s Car Choices

An MSU researcher discovered that people are 39 percent more likely to buy a particular brand of automobile if their parents bought that brand. This surprisingly strong correlation could affect automakers’ marketing and pricing decisions.

Student Entrepreneurship Space Expands

The Hatch, a student co-working space designed to host, accelerate, cultivate, and enable student entrepreneurship, has just opened a new 1,135-square-foot expansion. As part of MSU’s Innovation Center, The Hatch connects students with resources such as grants and funding competitions, mentoring support, research assistance, design, and web development.

MSU Researcher Develops Nuclear Waste-Eating Microbe

An MSU microbiologist has developed and patented a microbe to clean up nuclear waste. Research has improved the bacteria’s ability to neutralize uranium and other toxic wastes and to survive higher concentrations of radioactive material.
