EMBA Brings Together Successful Women

The Executive MBA program has organized two educational networking events, designed by career women, for career women. Join like-minded professionals the evening of Thursday, September 25, in Troy, or Thursday, October 2, in Lansing.

Green & White Forum in DC Highlights Broad Tourism Research

The Broad College, The School of Hospitality Business, and the MSU Alumni Association are hosting a Green & White Forum in Washington, DC, on Thursday, October 16. The event pairs a reception with a panel discussion and presentation highlighting faculty research on the positive impact of the Travel Promotion Act on U.S. tourism.

Come out to the Detroit Athletic Club on Thursday, October 23, 3:30–8:30 p.m., for the 2014 Broad Executive Forum of Detroit. This year’s keynote speaker is Peter Faricy (BA Marketing ’88), vice president and general manager of Amazon Marketplace. Find out what’s trending for the giant online retailer as Amazon expands its reach in a global marketplace of products and sellers. Registration includes afternoon and evening programs, a networking reception with hosted bar, hors d’oeuvres, and valet parking.

Undergraduate Program Climbs Six Places in U.S. News Ranking

Broad’s undergraduate business program was ranked No. 21 overall and No. 11 among public universities in the recently released U.S. News & World Report rankings. Last year, the college was ranked No. 27 overall and No. 16 among public universities. The college also continued its dominance in the supply chain management/logistics specialty, ranking No. 1 for the fourth straight year.

Abusive Leaders Affect the Whole Team

Research by a Broad scholar indicates that supervisors who treat individual employees abusively can negatively affect the entire work team, not just those on the receiving end of the abuse. Within these teams, hostility and conflict reign, hurting overall productivity.

Hospitality Alumnus to Speak at Warrington Lecture

Bill Weidner (BA Hotel and Restaurant Management ’67, MBA Marketing ’68), chairman and CEO of Global Gaming Asset Management and principal of Weidner Holdings, will be the speaker for this year’s Sylvan T. Warrington Visiting Lectureship in Ethics and Leadership. He has extensive experience in managing and investing in large hospitality and gaming businesses. The lecture will take place Thursday, October 2.

Men’s Basketball Schedule Announced

The recently announced men’s basketball schedule features two top-10 teams in the first few weeks of the season and at least one game with every Big Ten team. The team will play in MSU’s first-ever game at a military service academy as well as hosting Maryland for its first-ever Big Ten game.

Global Photo Competition Opens

MSU International Studies and Programs is accepting entries for Global Focus, its 2014 international photo competition that recognizes MSU faculty, staff, students, and alumni who have captured exceptional photographs abroad. Submissions are due Friday, October 3.

Masculine Self-Emphasis Helps Women Enter Male-Dominated Fields

Research by MSU scholars indicates that women applying for jobs in male-dominated fields should consider playing up their masculine qualities. In a laboratory experiment, women who described themselves using traditionally masculine traits (assertive, independent, achievement oriented) were evaluated as more fitting for a job than those who emphasized traditionally female traits (warmth, supportiveness, nurturing).
