We will examine tips and strategies to overcome these ghosts of our past and gain an understanding of the universality of these conjoined statuses. Whether you are in a position of being a First-generation Imposter or in a position to help someone who is\, this session is for you!

SUMMARY:Business & Bagels: Rethinking Leadership for the Modern Workforce
DESCRIPTION:Although it is generally acknowledged that people are the single most important component of an organization’s success\, leaders often struggle with how to best manage their workforce. This is particularly true when many leadership and management approaches are rooted in an “old school” leadership philosophy. In this interactive presentation\, Eli Broad Professor of Management Dr. Frederick Morgeson will draw from his nearly 30 years of experience as one of the most prolific and highly cited scholars in the world\, an award-winning educator\, and an active organizational consultant to discuss the fundamental ways in which the modern workplace has changed and the dangers of not adapting to the new reality. In so doing\, he highlights five “old school” leadership approaches that might be damaging your organization and offers practical solutions for how to change for the workforce of the future.

SUMMARY:Business & Bagels Distinguishing Between Functional & Dysfunctional Conflict
DESCRIPTION:Because conflict is inevitable in teams\, leading teams successfully requires the ability to manage and resolve conflict. However\, not all conflicts are alike. Debating or arguing over ideas can improve those ideas and ensure that the best ideas are selected. But when people take criticism and disagreement personally\, conflict can also derail team performance. This session will help leaders differentiate between functional and dysfunctional conflict and provide tips on how to encourage functional conflict while managing dysfunctional conflict.

SUMMARY:Business and Bagels: Mindfulness and Cognitive Function
DESCRIPTION:The widespread popularity of mindfulness is growing exponentially. However\, what do we really know about how it can help us stay focused\, resist distraction\, and bounce back from mistakes? What is more – what is really meant by the term “mindfulness”? In this talk\, Dr. Moser will review findings from our lab in the Neuroscience Program of the Department of Psychology as well as those of others to bear on these questions. Dr. Moser will highlight some promising results as well as the limits of our knowledge so far\, with our enthusiasm likely outpacing the scientific knowledge base.

SUMMARY:Business and Bagels: Improving Well-Being Outcomes for Veterans
DESCRIPTION:There are many unique populations in businesses. This includes persons with disabilities and Veterans. They may bring many unique perspectives to your business and work. We can learn how to be resilient from Veterans and Persons with Disabilities. We can also help persons with disabilities and Veterans be healthier and happier via employment. With this talk\, you will learn these unique populations\, positive psychology\, and employment as public health interventions. \nThis topic is presented by Emre Umucu\, Ph.D\, a partner in the V³ Lab. The V³ Lab\, a lab dedicated to improving veteran well-being\, recently received funding from the Department of Health and Human Services to improve health care access and services for veterans and caregivers living in rural areas. This work is an excellent example of how MSU collaborates with our community partners such as the Michigan Center for Rural Health\, Battle Creek VA Medical Center and the Michigan Veterans Affairs Agency. This project was highlighted by Gov. Gretchen Whitmer\, who said\, “Our service members put their lives on the line to protect our freedoms\, and we must ensure they have the support they need when they come home. It is vitally important that we support all of our veterans\, especially our underserved veteran populations. This includes making sure they have access to quality\, affordable health care and mental health services throughout Michigan.” \nCome join us to learn what you can do\, as an employer and/or colleague\, to improve well-being for veterans and unique populations that work in your organization.

SUMMARY:Business and Bagels | Applying Strategy to Board Design
DESCRIPTION:Description\nWhether a firm simply survives or actively thrives often hinges on the managers’ understanding—and ideally mastering—organizational design. Organizational design seeks to create alignment between the organization and its operational strategy through a mix of formal and informal structures\, processes\, and rewards. While the principles of organizational design apply to all parts of the firm\, one key area will be the focus of the January 19 Business and Bagels webinar: the board room. Shelby Gai\, Ph.D.\, will examine how leaders can structure their advisory boards to successfully execute on strategy. What factors should decisionmakers consider when searching for board candidates? What structure helps even the newest board member to fully and enthusiastically contribute to the decision-making process? Gai presents a framework that empowers managers to shape an advisory council as a buffer from current challenges while steering towards long-term success. \n  \nPresenter\nShelby Gai\, Ph.D. is an Assistant Professor of Management at Michigan State University. Her research focuses on board design – a subfield of organizational design that emphasizes how to design a company’s board of directors to align with the organization’s strategic goals. Her work has received awards including the 2018 Andreas Al-Laham Best Paper Award from the Multi-Level Network Research Standing Working Group at the European Group for Organizational Studies and was nominated for the 2019 Best Paper Proceedings from the Strategy Division of the Academy of Management. \nShelby graduated with an M.A. and Ph.D. in Management and Organizations from Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management. She also has an M.S. in Statistics from Northwestern as well as a M.A. from the Wharton School\, where she researched changes in Hong Kong’s board independence regulations using an institutional lens. Shelby graduated magna cum laude from Princeton University with an A.B. in Sociology and a certificate in East Asian Studies. Before entering academia\, Shelby worked in the Financial Services and Board Services Practices at the executive search firm Spencer Stuart in both their New York and Shanghai offices. \nShelby Gai\, assistant professor of management \n  \n

SUMMARY:Business And Bagels: Responsible AI For Business Leaders
DESCRIPTION:During this session of Business and Bagels\, you will hear from Anjana Susarla\, Ph.D.\, on the topic of Responsible Artificial Intelligence or AI. Fraught with bias\, AI is used by most service providers and retailers to guide marketing and other business decisions that impact their internal organization as well as their clients. Businesses are struggling to deflect bias in their AI- based decision making\, while many are asking for accountability for unintended consequences of those decisions. Examples are widespread and include lending agencies\, educators and health care providers.  Is there a framework or toolset for building responsible AI? Susarla will speak to what it means for businesses to commit to responsible AI and why it is an immediate priority for operational success and for society in general. \nPresenter\nAnjana Susarla\, Ph.D.\, is the Omura-Saxena Professor of Responsible AI in the Broad College of Business’ Department of Accounting and Information Systems. Her work has been referenced or quoted in over three dozen news outlets and has appeared in numerous revered research journals.

Brent Scott\, Ph.D.\, is at the leading edge of research regarding the way emotions play out in the work environment and their impact on well-being and productivity. During the September 15 Business and Bagels\, Scott will speak to how managers and team leaders can manage their own emotions to elicit desired outcome\, or to avoid unintended consequences like a sense of unfairness at work. Join Business and Bagels to get further acquainted with emotion regulation and fairness in the workplace. \nPresenter:\nBrent Scott\, Ph.D. is the Frederick S. Addy Distinguished Professor in the Broad College of Business Department of Management. His research focuses on the role of mood and emotions at work\, organizational justice\, and well-being.
