SUMMARY:Business & Bagels Distinguishing Between Functional & Dysfunctional Conflict
DESCRIPTION:Because conflict is inevitable in teams\, leading teams successfully requires the ability to manage and resolve conflict. However\, not all conflicts are alike. Debating or arguing over ideas can improve those ideas and ensure that the best ideas are selected. But when people take criticism and disagreement personally\, conflict can also derail team performance. This session will help leaders differentiate between functional and dysfunctional conflict and provide tips on how to encourage functional conflict while managing dysfunctional conflict.

SUMMARY:BroadX Chicago
DESCRIPTION:Unique business research from top faculty at MSU\nMichigan State University’s Broad College of Business has a unique\, leading voice in business education and marketplace change. With a passion for excellence\, our faculty conduct impactful research through innovative partnerships that stands to inform and inspire the future of business. \nEngage with top MSU faculty and fellow Spartans at the Broad College’s BroadX Chicago event on April 26! \nJoin us at the Aon Center to hear world-renowned faculty share thought-provoking and inspirational ways their research impacts business\, the workplace\, and daily life. \nAgenda\n5:30p | Doors Open & Networking Reception (hors d’oeuvres and refreshments provided) \n6:00p | BroadX Presentations \n7:00p | Q&A \nSpeakers\n\nThe Secret to Building Better Boards \nQuinetta Roberson\, John A. Hannah Distinguished Professor of Organizational Behavior \nOver the last 10 years\, organizations and governments have adopted board “show and tell” rules\, which require companies to either diversify their boards or disclose how diversity impacts the board nomination process. Yet\, we have little insight as to how such rules – or more importantly\, diversity on boards – impacts board functioning. \nThis talk from Quinetta Roberson\, John A. Hannah Distinguished Professor of Organizational Behavior\, will explore how diversity influences corporate governance and offer guidance on how companies can assemble boards that can drive performance. \nAs a Hannah Professor at Michigan State University\, Roberson has a joint appointment in the Broad College’s Department of Management and the College of Social Science’s Department of Psychology. Roberson’s research interests focus on developing organizational capability and enhancing effectiveness through the strategic management of people\, particularly diverse work teams. \n\nCybersecurity Across the Supply Chain: Improving Security By Addressing Three Key Paradoxes \nSteven Melnyk\, professor of supply chain management \nCybersecurity across the supply chain is becoming increasingly important. However\, most companies approach cybersecurity as if it only involves information technology\, large firms\, and unique solutions\, which supply chain management professor Steven Melnyk says is not entirely correct. \nIn this talk\, Melnyk will reveal how to improve security by addressing three key paradoxes: cybersecurity is not an IT issue but instead a supply chain issue; cybersecurity is not an issue for large firms but for small to medium sized enterprises; and by effectively addressing cybersecurity\, we build a foundation that supports development such as improved supply chain visibility. \nMelnyk’s areas of expertise are supply chain management and operations management. His research focus includes supply chain risk and resilience\, strategic supply chain management\, behavioral research\, and certified management standards. \n\nRewriting the Rules of Teamwork: The National Infrastructure for Multiteam System Research \nJohn Hollenbeck\, associate dean of research and Eli Broad University Professor of Business \nAs the pace\, scope\, and complexity of work in organizations increases\, traditional teams are too small and insufficiently specialized to meet the multifaceted demands of contemporary problems. This has resulted in an increased use of multiteam systems in business\, government\, medical\, and military contexts. \nScholars in the social and behavioral sciences have noticed the increased use of multiteam systems\, and accordingly\, research on this topic has expanded rapidly over the last 15 years. Unfortunately\, the small amount of existing research conducted with multiteam systems makes it clear that size and specialization matter\, and this precludes simple generalizations from teams to multiteam systems when it comes to theory and practice. \nJohn Hollenbeck\, associate dean of research and Eli Broad University Professor of Business\, says the “rules of teamwork” need to be rewritten. In this talk\, he’ll discuss his research involving a multimillion-dollar effort funded by multiple branches of the U.S. Department of Defense to create a national infrastructure for studying multiteam systems. \nHollenbeck is an award-winning researcher\, publishing over 100 articles and book chapters on the topics of team decision-making and work motivation. Over his career\, he has been awarded more than $10 million in external research funding\, primarily from the U.S. Department of Defense and the National Science Foundation.

SUMMARY:MSI Consortium - International Connectedness and MNE Strategy
DESCRIPTION:Description\nSpatial transaction costs — the cost of undertaking business and economic activities over geographic space — have been declining since the beginning of the industrial revolution mainly through technological advances. The ocean-going sailing ship\, railroads\, the telegraph\, the telephone\, and fax machines all caused spatial transactions costs to fall. However\, with the advent of the internet about 1990\, these declines have become exponential. \nMNE strategies have leveraged these technologies to create increasing wealth\, so the average levels of wealth around the globe have risen. Yet\, these MNE global strategies also feature a dark side. \nKEY TAKEAWAYS:\n• In the 20th-century\, birth geography determined income and welfare. In the 21st-century connected knowledge economy\, human capital determines income and welfare. Low human capital workers in rich countries have seen catastrophic declines in income and welfare. \n• Global connectedness often generates local disconnectedness which is the basis for rising inequality that fuels populism. \n• Global connectedness is often strongly driven by ethnic ties. \nThis webinar is FREE\, but registration is required. Zoom details will be sent to participants.
