In this Business and Bagels event\, we explore the possibility that having high self-control may also have some interpersonal costs\, leading individuals to become burdened by others’ reliance. During this virtual event\, Christy Zhou Koval\, Ph.D.\, will present her work on the interpersonal dynamics of self-control followed by some time for you to ask her questions and / or share your experience about being relied on by others. Click here to register!

SUMMARY:MSI Consortium - Virtual Exchange Projects with International Partners for Career Readiness
DESCRIPTION:Date\nThursday\, November 17\, 2022 11:00 AM – 12:00 PM \nDescription\nA key concern in business education is creating solid and sustained bridges between school and career. Career readiness remains a central focus and challenge. Recent studies by Pew Research points to the lack of preparedness of college graduates for the workplace and the need for novel approaches in what we teach\, and how we teach it\, to address the skills gap. In international business\, partnerships and virtual exchange are increasingly valuable ingredients in developing the skills required of today’s global managers. Using selected virtual exchange projects with partners in North and South Africa\, we discuss how global competencies\, cultural awareness\, and international virtual-teaming skills can be imparted as integral aspects of an international business curriculum. The three panelists representing academic and business groups will describe their roles in designing and implementing these collaborative cross-border projects\, their value to different stakeholders\, including students and employers\, and propose ways to assess and sustain these career readiness\, impactful initiatives. \nKey Takeaways \n\nConceiving\, implementing and assessing team-based\, virtual exchange projects\, involving international partners.\nLeveraging academic-business partnerships to ensure career relevant virtual exchange initiatives for students.\nIdentifying funding sources for signature international business projects.

SUMMARY:MSI Consortium - “Seeds of Growth: How AGCO Built a Global Tractor Powerhouse from Atlanta
DESCRIPTION:Date\nThursday\, December 1\, 2022 11:00 AM – 12:00 PM \nDescription\nWhen Martin Richenhagen joined AGCO Corp. in 2004\, it was already a $3 billion publicly traded firm. But sixteen years later\, when he retired from his posts as chairman and CEO\, it was a Fortune 500 powerhouse combining some of the biggest brands in the business of agricultural equipment. With $10 billion in sales\, it doubled in size during his tenure to more than 20\,000 employees around the globe. \nThis extraordinary growth story\, rooted in metro Atlanta\, is linked with Mr. Richenhagen’s vision to expand aggressively via acquisitions while peering constantly around the corner to see future trends in food and farming. \nKey Takeaways: \n-How multinational corporations should navigate a strategy of growth through acquisitions versus organic sales \n-Lessons on hiring\, training and deploying executives in various emerging and developed markets and across functions\, from management to marketing to manufacturing \n-How leaders can use embrace cultural differences as an advantage rather than a hindrance

SUMMARY:Business and Bagels: Improving Well-Being Outcomes for Veterans
DESCRIPTION:There are many unique populations in businesses. This includes persons with disabilities and Veterans. They may bring many unique perspectives to your business and work. We can learn how to be resilient from Veterans and Persons with Disabilities. We can also help persons with disabilities and Veterans be healthier and happier via employment. With this talk\, you will learn these unique populations\, positive psychology\, and employment as public health interventions. \nThis topic is presented by Emre Umucu\, Ph.D\, a partner in the V³ Lab. The V³ Lab\, a lab dedicated to improving veteran well-being\, recently received funding from the Department of Health and Human Services to improve health care access and services for veterans and caregivers living in rural areas. This work is an excellent example of how MSU collaborates with our community partners such as the Michigan Center for Rural Health\, Battle Creek VA Medical Center and the Michigan Veterans Affairs Agency. This project was highlighted by Gov. Gretchen Whitmer\, who said\, “Our service members put their lives on the line to protect our freedoms\, and we must ensure they have the support they need when they come home. It is vitally important that we support all of our veterans\, especially our underserved veteran populations. This includes making sure they have access to quality\, affordable health care and mental health services throughout Michigan.” \nCome join us to learn what you can do\, as an employer and/or colleague\, to improve well-being for veterans and unique populations that work in your organization.

SUMMARY:Business & Bagels Distinguishing Between Functional & Dysfunctional Conflict
DESCRIPTION:Because conflict is inevitable in teams\, leading teams successfully requires the ability to manage and resolve conflict. However\, not all conflicts are alike. Debating or arguing over ideas can improve those ideas and ensure that the best ideas are selected. But when people take criticism and disagreement personally\, conflict can also derail team performance. This session will help leaders differentiate between functional and dysfunctional conflict and provide tips on how to encourage functional conflict while managing dysfunctional conflict.
