The pipeline crosses the Straits of Mackinac\, leading to concerns about a potential oil spill from the 65-year-old pipeline. Shutting down the pipeline could have significant economic and environmental impacts in Canada and parts of the United States. \nThis international panel brings together diverse voices to address the concerns on both sides of the border related to Line 5\, as well as a potential diplomatic resolution as both countries commit to green-energy strategies. SUMMARY:Lansing Economic Club With Loretta J. Ross\, "Calling in the Calling Out Culture"
DESCRIPTION:Join us Tuesday\, March 2 from 10:40 a.m. – 12:15 p.m. for the Lansing Economic Club partnering with the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr Commission of Mid-Michigan to feature Professor Loretta Ross\, Institute for Democratic Education and Culture. Professor Ross appears regularly in major media outlets about the issues of our day. She was recently featured in a New York Times piece\, “What if Instead of Calling People Out\, We Called Them In?” which will be the focus of the conversation. \nWe are facing a tumultuous future in this country\, with the rise of neo-fascism scaffolded by the Republicans in the context of neo-liberalism enabled by the Democrats. Fighting against oppression and injustice are the dues we pay for the privilege of being conscious and we are honored to be able to challenge it with great responsibility. We begin to build a unified and strategic human rights movement that weaves our strengths together\, that uses our differences as a platform for modeling a positive future built on justice and the politics of love\, rather than a return to the past based on the politics of fear and prejudice. However\, to create this movement we need to make a commitment to recognize and support each other – calling people in rather than calling them out\, a prerequisite for building a united movement for human rights. \nThe program begins at 11 a.m. Virtual networking will occur before the program from 10:40-11 a.m. and after the program from noon to 12:15 p.m.

SUMMARY:Global Business Club of Mid-Michigan: TikTok\, WeChat & More: Talking Tech and IP in the U.S. & China
DESCRIPTION:The U.S. and China compete for global dominance in the areas of tech and innovation; however\, in an era of global firms and global citizens they must also learn to cooperate. The U.S. espouses free speech while the Trump administration pushed for banning social media platforms like TikTok and WeChat. China wants to be taken seriously as a global player but is often seen as disregarding global standards and norms. How can these two superpowers find common ground? This program is organized as part of our China & The World program series\, organized in conjunction with MSU Asian Studies Center and MSU Office of China Programs. \nThe Global Business Club of Mid-Michigan focuses on global issues of interest to the mid-Michigan business community. The monthly GB Club luncheons provide outstanding speakers and relaxed networking opportunities. With extensive international experience\, the speakers wrap personal insights around a practical and up-to-the-minute approach to conducting international trade. \nPanel Speakers:\n\nFarok J. Contractor\, Ph.D.\, President-Elect AIB (Academy of International Business)\,\nDistinguished Professor\, Management & Global Business\, Rutgers Business School\nJean Schtokal\, International Business & Export Controls Attorney\, Foster\, Swift\,\nCollins & Smith PC\n(Alvin) Deng Jun\, Head of IP\, China\, Novozymes (China) Investment Co.
