We sat down with recent Broad Executive MBA graduate Autumn Herod and chatted about her commute from Florida, lessons learned during the program, and advice she has for new and prospective EMBA students.
Autumn Herod, EMBA ’24
Broad: What skills or knowledge did you learn throughout the program that you found most useful in your career?
Herod: My undergraduate degree was in transportation and logistics, and a big draw to MSU was the access to the top supply chain management program. We had two classes specifically focusing on SCM and the lessons I learned helped bring my knowledge of current supply chain methodology to the next level. Through my time in the program, I forged a network that opened doors that I hadn’t even thought of prior to joining. From a class paper and network connections made, I was invited to speak at a leading supply chain conference. That same class inspired me to publish my first book. I’ve gotten so much from the EMBA program and I’m grateful for the experience.
Broad: Reflecting on your decision to participate in the Executive MBA program, what was the biggest hurdle or obstacle you had to overcome, and how did you address it?
Herod: Balancing family time and class/homework time. I commuted from Florida, so it was a time investment for my family as much as mine. Being intentional in balancing my time was crucial to my success academically, professionally, and most importantly, personally.
From a scholastic sense, I found it helpful to become a more active reader and take advantage of the practice exercises given by the program. Given the time gap between undergraduate and graduate programs, the refreshers were invaluable.
Broad: What advice would you provide to prospective and current EMBA students?
Herod: Time will fly. Soak up every minute you can with your teammates, classmates, and faculty. The professors are truly passionate about their areas of expertise and genuinely want to help everyone succeed. Don’t blink because you too will be walking across that stage with a new sense of self and purpose before you know it.
