SUMMARY:Business and Bagels | Applying Strategy to Board Design
DESCRIPTION:Description\nWhether a firm simply survives or actively thrives often hinges on the managers’ understanding—and ideally mastering—organizational design. Organizational design seeks to create alignment between the organization and its operational strategy through a mix of formal and informal structures\, processes\, and rewards. While the principles of organizational design apply to all parts of the firm\, one key area will be the focus of the January 19 Business and Bagels webinar: the board room. Shelby Gai\, Ph.D.\, will examine how leaders can structure their advisory boards to successfully execute on strategy. What factors should decisionmakers consider when searching for board candidates? What structure helps even the newest board member to fully and enthusiastically contribute to the decision-making process? Gai presents a framework that empowers managers to shape an advisory council as a buffer from current challenges while steering towards long-term success. \n  \nPresenter\nShelby Gai\, Ph.D. is an Assistant Professor of Management at Michigan State University. Her research focuses on board design – a subfield of organizational design that emphasizes how to design a company’s board of directors to align with the organization’s strategic goals. Her work has received awards including the 2018 Andreas Al-Laham Best Paper Award from the Multi-Level Network Research Standing Working Group at the European Group for Organizational Studies and was nominated for the 2019 Best Paper Proceedings from the Strategy Division of the Academy of Management. \nShelby graduated with an M.A. and Ph.D. in Management and Organizations from Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management. She also has an M.S. in Statistics from Northwestern as well as a M.A. from the Wharton School\, where she researched changes in Hong Kong’s board independence regulations using an institutional lens. Shelby graduated magna cum laude from Princeton University with an A.B. in Sociology and a certificate in East Asian Studies. Before entering academia\, Shelby worked in the Financial Services and Board Services Practices at the executive search firm Spencer Stuart in both their New York and Shanghai offices. \nShelby Gai\, assistant professor of management \n  \n

SUMMARY:BroadX | Virtual Presentation
DESCRIPTION:Unique business research from top faculty at MSU\nBroadX is a series of alumni engagement events featuring MSU Broad College faculty discussing the ways MSU has a unique\, leading voice in business education and marketplace change. Come engage with your fellow alumni and these world-renowned faculty as they share short\, thought-provoking\, and inspirational ways their research impacts business\, the workplace and daily. \nMeet the Speakers\n\n\n\n\n“Where Have All the Truck Drivers Gone?” – Dr. Jason Miller\n\n\n\n\n\nMuch has been about a “shortage” of truck drivers\, but state-level employment data suggests the slow recovery of trucking employment is due to the slow recovery of manufacturing employment. \nDr. Miller is an Associate Professor of Supply Chain Management at the Broad College of Business. He examines various topics in the for-hire trucking sector including safety\, pricing dynamics\, productivity\, driver turnover\, and employment. He holds a Ph.D. in Business Administration with a Major in Business Logistics and a Minor in Quantitative Psychology from The Ohio State University.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“How do Emotions Affect Us at Work? How Do We Control Them?” – Dr. Brent Scott\n\n\n\n\n\nTraditionally\, emotions were viewed as having no place in business. However\, emotions are a natural part of people’s work lives. Dr. Scott will discuss the benefits and detriments that emotions can have at work\, as well as the predominant strategies that workers use to control their emotional displays. \nDr. Scott is the Frederick S. Addy Distinguished Professor of Management at the Broad College of Business. He conducts research on the role of emotions at work\, fairness and the workplace\, and employee well-being. He obtained his Ph.D. in Business Administration from the University of Florida.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“Not Politically Correct! Customer Political Partisanship and Customer-Firm Relationships.” – Dr. Ayalla Ruvio\n\n\n\n\n\nConventional wisdom has it that Democrats and Republicans are inherently different in their world views and often their behaviors. Yet should we expect consumers with different political affiliations to exhibit different attitudes and behaviors towards the companies they purchased from? \nDr. Ruvio is an Associate Professor of Marketing at the Broad College of Business. She is an applied consumer behavior researcher who focuses on issues such as identity and consumption\, material vs. experiential consumption\, and consumer arrogance. She holds a Ph.D. in Entrepreneurship from the University of Haifa.
