Business & Bagels: Supporting First Generation Employees

Being the first in one’s family to attend a four-year college where neither parent graduated from college can have a lasting effect, both in college and after graduation. Coupled with the feeling of being an Imposter, like you really don’t belong, can also haunt us in the workplace. This session will examine what it means to be a first-generation college graduate who has experienced the Imposter Phenomenon and how that can continue to impact us in our careers. We will examine tips and strategies to overcome these ghosts of our past and gain an understanding of the universality of these conjoined statuses. Whether you are in a position of being a First-generation Imposter or in a position to help someone who is, this session is for you!

Business & Bagels: Rethinking Leadership for the Modern Workforce

Although it is generally acknowledged that people are the single most important component of an organization’s success, leaders often struggle with how to best manage their workforce. This is particularly true when many leadership and management approaches are rooted in an “old school” leadership philosophy. In this interactive presentation, Eli Broad Professor of Management Dr. Frederick Morgeson will draw from his nearly 30 years of experience as one of the most prolific and highly cited scholars in the world, an award-winning educator, and an active organizational consultant to discuss the fundamental ways in which the modern workplace has changed and the dangers of not adapting to the new reality. In so doing, he highlights five “old school” leadership approaches that might be damaging your organization and offers practical solutions for how to change for the workforce of the future.
