AI for Business Leaders: Explore MSU’s Graduate Certificate

Artificial intelligence is becoming an increasingly important part of how organizations operate, make decisions and plan for the future. As its role in business grows, understanding AI is becoming important not only for technical professionals, but also for the leaders responsible for deciding how and where it should be used.

Michigan State University’s Artificial Intelligence for Business Leadership Graduate Certificate prepares current, emerging and aspiring business leaders to lead AI-enabled transformation. The 9-credit program combines AI application, business strategy and responsible governance to help professionals evaluate AI opportunities, lead organizational change and use AI to create value.

For students interested in developing these skills, the Spring 2027 track provides an opportunity to complete the certificate across the spring and summer semesters.

What Will You Learn in the AI for Business Leadership Program?

The AI for Business Leadership Graduate Certificate focuses on the business decisions surrounding artificial intelligence rather than solely on the technical development of AI systems.

Students learn how to connect the capabilities of AI with organizational needs while considering the broader implications of introducing the technology into a business.

Throughout the program, students will learn how to:

  • Integrate AI effectively into business strategy and operations
  • Evaluate AI opportunities and make recommendations for its application
  • Lead teams and manage change in AI-enabled organizations
  • Make informed recommendations about AI policies
  • Address ethical, legal and governance issues related to AI adoption

Together, these skills can help professionals move beyond simply using AI tools and develop a broader understanding of how AI can support their organizations.

What AI Challenges Does This Certificate Address for Business Leaders?

Adopting AI within an organization involves more than identifying where the technology can improve efficiency or create new opportunities. Business leaders also need to understand the risks that can come with AI. They also need to set up practices that support responsible use.

Some of the challenges organizations may need to navigate include:

  • AI hallucinations: Generative AI can produce false or made-up information that seems credible. Human oversight and fact-checking are important when AI supports business decisions.
  • Algorithmic bias: AI systems can produce biased outcomes. This can happen due to data, assumptions, or processes behind them. Leaders must consider fairness and potential impacts when evaluating AI applications.
  • Data privacy: AI applications may use large amounts of data. This raises questions about how sensitive information is collected, accessed, shared, and protected.
  • Transparency and accountability: Organizations need to consider how people can understand AI-supported decisions and who ultimately takes responsibility for the outcomes.
  • Evolving regulations: As laws and regulatory frameworks surrounding AI develop, organizations need governance practices that can adapt to changing requirements.

MSU’s AI for Business Leadership Graduate Certificate explores these topics through a business lens. It helps students understand how organizations can use AI opportunities. It also covers responsible adoption, business goals, and stakeholder trust.

Why Is AI Important for Business Leaders?

AI is becoming a leadership competency, not just a technical skill. Its applications can extend across finance, marketing, operations, human resources, project management and other areas of an organization.

As businesses decide how to use AI, leaders may need to find opportunities. They may evaluate possible uses and manage changes to teams and operations. They may also help set policies for responsible use.

For business leaders, developing AI knowledge does not necessarily mean becoming an AI developer. It means developing the ability to understand the technology well enough to make informed decisions about how it can be used within an organization.

MSU’s AI for Business Leadership program is designed around this perspective, bringing together AI application, strategy, leadership and governance.

Who Is the AI for Business Leadership Program For?

The program is designed for current, emerging and aspiring business leaders across industries, business functions and career stages.

Whether you are early in your career or already an experienced leader, understanding how to harness and leverage AI can help you navigate its growing role in business.

The certificate may be particularly useful for:

  • Mid-career professionals
  • Managers and directors
  • Project managers
  • Business analysts
  • Consultants
  • Entrepreneurs
  • Operations professionals
  • Marketing professionals
  • Human resources professionals
  • Finance professionals

Because AI can have applications throughout an organization, professionals do not need to work in a traditional technology role to benefit from developing AI leadership skills.

What Does the AI for Business Leadership Curriculum Cover?

The 9-credit curriculum brings together coursework focused on the technology, application and governance of AI alongside broader business and management skills.

Students explore topics such as AI and enabling technologies, applied AI, project management, artificial intelligence governance and the integration of AI into business applications. For students following 2027 track, the curriculum includes:
