Alumni among “30 Best Executive MBAs,” “MBAs to Watch” for 2015

Lars Carlson (Executive MBA ’15) was named to the Poets & Quants “Best Executive MBAs” list for 2015. Carlson will soon become CEO of Youth Haven, Inc., a nonprofit organization that serves disadvantaged and at-risk children. Patricia Weiss (Full-Time MBA ’15) was named to another Poets & Quants list of “MBAs to Watch in the Class of 2015.”

50th Anniversary Broad Executive Forum of Detroit to Feature Hollis, Izzo as Keynote Speakers

The 50th annual Broad Executive Forum of Detroit will be Wednesday, September 23, at MSU’s Management Education Center in Troy. Since 1965, the forum has hosted senior executives of many Fortune 100 companies, as well as the region’s influential business leaders, for continuing education and business networking opportunities. Forum co-chairs Glenn Stevens (BA Economics ’87, MBA ’97) and Seth Drucker (BS Engineering ’93) have announced that this year’s forum will feature MSU’s Athletic Director Mark Hollis and Head Men’s Basketball Coach Tom Izzo as keynote speakers. Attendance is open to all Spartans, their clients, and business colleagues. Registration will be available soon!

Grandparents University Welcomes Alumni, Future Alumni to Campus

Nearly 1,200 alumni grandparents and grandchildren participated in the Grandparents University event, June 30–July 2 across campus. Broad College faculty and staff offered classroom opportunities to 285 of these participants during the event through courses in marketing and entrepreneurship, culinary arts, multicultural global awareness, supply chain, and personal finance and accounting.

“Thin Business Sparty” Travels Country, World This Summer

As Broad College students, faculty, and staff travel this summer to pursue study abroad, research, and other means of making business happen globally, “Thin Business Sparty” is accompanying them. Follow his travels.

Gift Creates Sales Faculty Fellow Position

Mortgage lender United Shore and Mat Ishbia (BA Management ’03), its president and CEO, will create a new faculty fellow position in the Broad College through a gift of $500,000. This will provide support for a faculty member who has exhibited leadership in sales research and sales teaching.

Students Prepare for Industry in Virtual Labs

Virtual desktop infrastructure allows students in a Logistics and Transportation Management course to access the software used in the field from their own smartphones, tablets, and computers. This broadens their access to hands-on learning, such as designing the layout of a grocery store and then going shopping to see how logistics are affected.

Student Consultants Market Michigan Tourism

A student consulting program through the Broad College’s Institute for Entrepreneurship and Innovation is helping a northern Michigan snow bike tour operator market its offerings. The project is part of a partnership to support small businesses receiving community development loans.

MSU Gardens Ranked “Most Amazing” in U.S.

MSU’s W.J. Beal Botanical Garden and Hidden Lake Gardens were ranked among the “50 Most Amazing University Botanical Gardens and Arboretums in the U.S.” by Best Colleges Online. The five-acre Beal Garden serves as a campus outdoor laboratory for plant study, while Hidden Lake Gardens is located in Tipton, Mich.

MSU Startup Helps Microbreweries Go Nuts

A new MSU startup company provides chestnuts to the American microbrewing market in the form of flavorful, easy-to-use chips that can be applied at all stages of brewing. Michigan is first in chestnut production and MSU is the only place in the Western hemisphere with a commercial chestnut peeling line.
