WHY CONSULTING

“As I was searching for jobs throughout my senior year at Michigan State, I explored a range of industries. As an International Relations major, my interests and internship experience were in the public / non-profit sectors. However, I was interested in learning more about opportunities in the private sector and began speaking to alums working across a range of industries. After speaking with a few consultants, I became intrigued by management consulting, and looked into a few opportunities in this field. I did not end up going into consulting upon graduation and accepted a job to join a rotational program at Georgia Pacific where I traveled for a year to learn about various business units (i.e., analytics, sales, operations, and supply chain). While I enjoyed my experience, I remained interested in management consulting, and after one year of working at Georgia Pacific I began actively seeking consulting opportunities. I was drawn to management consulting as I was looking for a culture that was more fast-paced, challenging, and competitive, and also wanted the opportunity to develop a well-rounded skill set and work across a range of industries.”

ONE THING LEARNED AT MSU THAT HAS AIDED CAREER

“My experience in James Madison taught me how to think critically. Rather than simply memorizing answers for a test, we had to form original arguments based on what we had learned and read throughout the semester. Being able to critique an existing argument / belief, form a unique opinion, and communicate that opinion clearly has been very helpful throughout my career thus far.”

BIGGEST SURPRISE IN CONSULTING CAREER

“After working in consulting for over a year, I continue to be surprised by the dramatic differences between each project. Each client has a unique goal or challenge, culture, and a new work approach is taken for every single project. It is a perfect career for those who enjoy continuously learning, being challenged, and working with a team to develop strategies and creatively problem solve.”

ADVICE TO SOMEONE ASPIRING TO CONSULTING CAREER

“Don’t be afraid to ask questions and vocalize your opinions. The problems you’ll be addressing throughout projects rarely have one right answer, and the best way to develop individually and help your team is to actively contribute to the discussion.”
