Broad Experts Shine at Academy of Management Annual Conference

Eight experts from the Broad College of Business Department of Management earned accolades at the Academy of Management’s 77th Annual Meeting, themed “At the Interface.”

The AOM Annual Meeting features more than 2,000 sessions, meetings, and opportunities for scholars and professionals to engage in pressing industry topics, ranging from social responsibility to workplace dynamics.

Gerry McNamara, Eli Broad Professor of Management, Cindy Devers (PhD Management ’04), and current PhD students Lingling Pan and Jennifer received a Distinguished Paper Award from the Strategic Management Division for their paper, “When Should I Give It to You Straight? Top Managers’ Use of Concrete versus Abstract Language as an Impression Management Tool and Its Effects on Investor Reactions.”

Assistant Professor Nicholas Hays and PhD student Alice Guo received the Best Symposium Award from the Organizational Behavior Division for their work, titled “Interfacing Hierarchies: Investigating the Confluence of Multiple Hierarchies.”

Don Conlon

Don Conlon, department chairperson and Gambrel Professor of Management, and Dustin Sleesman (PhD Management ’12) were among the authors who received the Best Empirical or Theoretical Paper Award from the Conflict Management Division for their paper, “Unpacking BATNA Availability: How Probability Can Impact Power in Negotiation.”

“Recognition through the AOM validates our department’s reputation as leaders in the field of management. We take pride in knowing that our faculty experts are enhancing our knowledge of the dynamics of organizations, as well as knowing we are at the forefront of research in areas such as strategy, power, conflict, and negotiation,” Conlon said.
