When Spartans give back, the ripple effect is seen across generations. Michigan State University honors these influential Spartans at the annual Grand Awards Gala, held October 19.
Dean Sanjay Gupta and wife Kiran celebrated Joel Clum, MSU Young Alumni Award recipient.
The 11 Grand Award recipients were selected by the MSU Alumni Association Awards Committee, and included the likes of Earvin “Magic” Johnson and Dr. Mona Hanna-Attisha. Among these honorees included two Broad alumni and one close friend to the Broad College: Craig Menear (BA Human Resources ‘79), chairman, CEO, and president of The Home Depot; and Joel Clum (BA Finance ’08), chief operating officer of Worldwide Express; and Thomas Luccock, director of internal audit and senior advisor to the President.
- MSU honored Menear with a Distinguished Alumni Award, which recognizes alumni who have distinguished themselves by obtaining the highest levels of professional accomplishments and who possess the highest standards of integrity and character to positively reflect and enhance the prestige of MSU. Menear has spoken at the Broad College Commencement ceremony and the annual Warrington Lecture, and is a generous donor of the Business Pavilion.
- Clum received a Young Alumni Award, which is presented to graduates 40 years and younger who have distinguished themselves through high levels of professional accomplishment early in their careers. MSU honors these alumni because of their commitment to MSU, via outstanding continuous volunteer service on behalf of the university, or participation and leadership in meritorious public service on a local, state, national or international level. At MSU, Clum led a nonprofit consulting initiative, Students Consulting for Nonprofits and, as an alumnus, supported its expansion to universities across the country.
- Luccock received an Honorary Alumnus Award, which is presented to an individual who has demonstrated outstanding continuous volunteer service to, and impact on, MSU. Luccock joined MSU nearly in 2000 and has continued to demonstrate leadership through volunteerism, mentoring, philanthropy and general support for higher education at MSU. Luccock and his wife, Cathy, support Broad College Department of Accounting students with the Thomas N. Luccock Audit Scholarship Endowment.
