The faculty director of the Financial Markets Institute has been tapped to become the next chairperson of the Department of Finance at the Eli Broad College of Business, Dean Sanjay Gupta announced earlier this month.
Andrei Simonov, professor of finance, will take the department’s helm from Naveen Khanna, effective Aug. 16, 2019. Simonov is an expert in U.S. and international stock markets, institutional and individual investors, investment banking and behavioral finance.
Simonov was recently promoted to research fellow for the Centre for Economic Policy Research. Other roles he has held through the years are scientific director for the Research Center for Empirical Finance at Gaidar Institute for Economic Policy in Moscow, Russia; J. P. Morgan Visiting Professor of Finance at the New Economic School; and research associate in the Stockholm International Corporate Governance Institute.
He received his Ph.D. in finance from the European Institute of Business Administration in 2000. He also holds a Ph.D. in theoretical physics from Moscow State University. His research interests include asset pricing, individual portfolio decision and behavioral finance.
His work is regularly presented at leading finance conferences including the American Economic Association, American Finance Association, Western Finance Association, European Finance Association, and CEPR meetings. His publications appear in leading finance and management journals, including the Journal of Finance, Review of Financial Studies, Journal of Financial Economics, Review of Finance, and Management Science, among others.
During Khanna’s tenure as chair, the department successfully launched an Insurance & Risk Management minor and a Wealth Management program and supported the start of an upgraded ethics curriculum.
