Angela Minielly (BA ’16), a senior in The 
School of Hospitality Business, received a Heart and Soul Award during National Volunteer Week recognitions April 10-16. Through the Michigan Campus Compact (MiCC), a number of MSU students earned the Heart and Soul Award from the Center for Service-Learning and Civic Engagement.
Angela was nominated for the award by Director of The School’s Student and Industry Resource Center (SIRC) Authella Collins Hawks, advisor to The School’s student-led Hospitality Association (HA), which supports and funds nine industry-related clubs and three major events in The School. Angela is a member of the executive board for HA, serving as its director of Philanthropy and captain of its Relay for Life team, becoming the team’s top fundraiser for the past two years. For the 65th Anniversary Les Gourmets event in early April, Angela served as director of reception. She is also an active member in the student chapter of Club Managers Association of America (CMAA) and is the secretary for the MSU Club Golf Team.
Angela has personally worked with Relay for Life for a number of years, and has raised over $30,000 in the fight against cancer. This year HA raised $8,000, which was $1,000 over the group’s stated goal and more than $3,000 over last year’s earnings. Angela is committed to continuing to raise funds this summer. In other philanthropic activities, she led student efforts to assist a number of organizations, including Haven House in Lansing and the Greater Lansing Food Bank. Under Angela’s leadership, HA adopted a family during the Christmas season, providing personalized gifts for each family member.
“I am so grateful to have been nominated by Mrs. Hawks and to receive the Heart and Soul Award this year,” says Angela. “As a student in The School of Hospitality Business, helping others is truly a part of who I am, which helps explain my passion for philanthropy. And that passion will continue even after I graduate and begin my career.”
According to Renee Zientek, director of MSU’s office of Service-Learning and Civic Engagement, the Heart and Soul Awards recognize students “for their time, effort, and personal commitment to community engagement. Through service projects, civic participation, public policy, social entrepreneurship initiative, or internships, all Heart and Soul awardees helped strengthen communities by their involvement.”
The Michigan Campus Compact is a statewide organization that promotes the education and commitment of Michigan college students to be civically engaged citizens through creating and expanding academic, co-curricular, and campus-wide opportunities for community service, service-learning, and civic engagement.
