This November, Broad College of Business was thrilled to host the Chicago/Detroit cohort of the Diversity in Leadership program. Participants spent an engaging weekend on campus, gaining insights about strategic leadership, participating in a team simulation, hearing from current MBA students and alumni, and generally experiencing what it’s like to be a Spartan at MSU.
The Diversity in Leadership program is focused on growing skills, networks and exposure to opportunities with the goal of fostering more inclusive leadership in the workplace, classroom, and beyond. The program partners with several Midwest universities to host cohorts, and we’re proud that Michigan State is the first and only university in Michigan to collaborate with this impactful initiative.

The weekend was structured around key Broad strengths – working effectively in teams, efficient organizational management, and strategic decision-making. Students participated in a strategic organizations course led by Shelby Gai, assistant professor of management, did a live simulation in the Kesseler Team Leadership Lab, and wrapped up their time on campus with a session on Innovative Leadership led by Associate Dean Ayalla Ruvio. Other highlights included a behind the scenes tour of Breslin Center, meeting with legendary coach Tom Izzo and attending the MSU Women’s Basketball game.
DIL graduates enjoy unique benefits at partner institutions like MSU, including generous scholarships, a streamlined admissions process, and access to a large alumni network. Already 70% of DIL graduates continue their education, pursuing master’s or Ph.D. programs. Each cohort completes a 7-month curriculum, meeting once a month for a long weekend at a different partner university. Students take a series of core business courses, covering topics such as executive mindset, organizational strategy, accounting and finance, and leadership communication, and conclude with a final capstone project.
