Cultivating an inclusive internal culture amongst faculty, staff, and students and strengthening relationships with alumni, corporate partners, and the community.
At the Broad College of Business, community is the foundation of excellence. Fostering a sense of belonging—where every student, faculty member, staff colleague, alumnus, and partner feels valued—drives our shared purpose and collective success.
Through our Community Outreach and Belonging initiative, we bring together two essential commitments:
This initiative is part of the updated Broad Strategic Plan and directly aligns with Michigan State University’s framework of Access, Opportunity, and Excellence, ensuring that every Spartan has the tools, pathways, and encouragement to thrive.
Fostering inclusive communities means intentionally creating an environment where every individual feels respected, valued, and supported. This includes ensuring everyone can meaningfully engage in academic, professional, and social activities—both within Broad and throughout the wider MSU network.
The Broad College promotes inclusion at every level of operation, from classroom practices to community engagement. We regularly assess progress through surveys, feedback, and data to ensure accountability and continuous improvement.
The Broad College’s commitment to inclusive excellence is reflected in the people who lead it. Through their work, the college fosters belonging, advances faculty and staff success, and strengthens connections with students, alumni, corporate partners, and the broader community. Together, they ensure that Broad remains a welcoming, high-performing, and purpose-driven environment aligned with Michigan State University’s values of access, opportunity, and excellence.
The Broad College’s Faculty Excellence Advocate and Director of Community Outreach and Belonging are here to support our internal communities.

Understanding our community’s voices is essential to guiding progress and strengthening belonging. The Broad College conducts bi-annual climate surveys with students, faculty, and staff to assess perceptions of inclusion, transparency, development, and engagement. Findings from these surveys inform our ongoing efforts to strengthen communication, belonging, and professional growth.
Student satisfaction rose to 86.6% (from 73.3% in 2022); employee satisfaction rose to 70.7% (from 61.9%). These results show measurable progress in communication, recognition, and belonging.
The baseline survey identified themes of transparency, belonging, and recognition—providing the foundation for Broad’s community-building initiatives.
