Conlon named Withrow Teacher-Scholar

Don ConlonDon Conlon, Eli Broad Professor of Management, has been honored as the 2014 recipient of the Withrow Teacher-Scholar Award. This award is presented to a faculty member who has achieved the highest level of distinction for service to Michigan State University through excellence in teaching and scholarship.

His research focuses on negotiation and conflict management, organizational justice, and decision making. He has published more than 50 refereed articles and 14 chapters, with 60% in the most highly regarded management and psychology journals. His scholarship has had significant impact on the field, as noted by the more than 5,000 citations of his work that Harzing’s Publish or Perish reports.

Conlon received his doctorate from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He joined the Broad College in 1998 as an associate professor and was promoted to professor in 2000. In 2006, he was awarded a Broad Professorship and became chair of the Department of Management, a role he served in until 2011.

He has served as a strong mentor of doctoral students and junior faculty, having collaborated with nearly every doctoral student to come through the department since his arrival, as well as with most of the faculty. His classroom success is demonstrated in his consistently high teaching evaluations, averaging more than 4.5 out of 5.

During his time as chair, he created two endowments with the support of faculty and alumni to support research and the doctoral program. These endowments continue to grow.

The Withrow Teacher-Scholar Award was established through an endowment from John D. and Dortha J. Withrow and first awarded in 1992.

Conlon was presented the award at the faculty meeting held September 12, 2014.
