Michigan State University is well known for excellence in supply chain management. The Broad College of Business, home to the Department of Supply Chain Management, has been renowned as a leader in research and academic programs for years. And this leading status is reaffirmed in U.S. News & World Report’s 2023 Best Colleges ranking.

For the 12th consecutive year, the Broad College’s undergraduate supply chain management/logistics programs are ranked No. 1 among both public and private schools.

“This recognition is a testament to the hard work put in by the department to conduct cutting-edge research and deliver an outstanding educational experience,” Jason Miller, interim chairperson of the department and associate professor of supply chain management, said.

Spartans lead in supply chain across the board, holding the No. 1 spot for graduate programs for six consecutive years in U.S. News & World Report’s national ranking and No. 1 for research productivity on the SCM Journal List since 2015. Our faculty also conduct research that solves real industry problems and has shaped the very definition of supply chain.

“As a faculty member who served in the supply chain management department since joining the Broad College in 2006, I can attest to the dedication of the faculty, staff and students,” Judith Whipple, interim dean and Donald J. Bowersox and Robert W. Thull Professor in Logistics and Supply Chain Management, said. “We continuously focus on maintaining our thought leadership and commitment to excellence in all we do.

“While this ranking is an important part of the department’s history, it also enables the college to attract the best and brightest to join us as faculty, staff and students,” she continued. “Recent world events have shown the importance of supply chain, and Spartans are ready to take on the challenges of today and the future.”

Top 25 overall

Beyond our strengths in supply chain management, the Broad College’s undergraduate programs have landed among the Top 25 for nine consecutive years. This year, these programs came in at No. 13 among public universities and No. 23 overall, among both public and private schools.

“Across disciplines, Broad College faculty and staff intentionally strive to provide the best educational experiences, supported by leading-edge research integrated into the classroom, exceptional academic and support services and experiential learning activities to ensure our students are career ready at graduation and beyond,” Whipple said. “The recent rankings, placing us in the top 25 overall and 13th among public universities, illustrate the recognition of this effort and solidify our position among the top business schools in the nation. This highlights the strength of our faculty, staff and students who consistently show their Spartan Will.”

The annual rankings produced by U.S. News & World Report are based on judgments made by deans and senior faculty at peer schools accredited by AACSB. These deans and senior faculty were also asked to nominate programs in specialty areas, where Broad also consistently performs well:

  • 5th for Production/Operations Management, ranked in the top 10 since 2016
  • 11th for Management, tied for its best placement and ranked in the top 25 since 2014
  • 22nd for Marketing, its best placement since 2017
  • 23rd for Management Information Systems, ranked in the top 25 since 2018
  • 25th for Accounting, ranked in the top 25 since 2003

“The faculty and staff at the Broad College are committed to delivering a high-quality, innovative educational experience, and this shows in our rankings across our majors,” Richard Spreng, associate dean for undergraduate programs and associate professor of marketing, said. “Our academic departments continue to add experiential learning to our courses. In addition, our student support folks from Undergraduate Academic Services, the Russell Palmer Career Management Center, Residential Business Community, Multicultural Business Programs, Undergraduate Student Engagement and Education Abroad programs, and all the members of their teams, work tirelessly to constantly improve the undergraduate student experience.”
