Travel with me on a trip to Munich, Germany, where innovation, culture and history intertwine to create an unforgettable experience. This education abroad experience with the Michigan State University Broad Full-Time MBA program was a one-of-a-kind trip filled with exploration and education, offering a chance to step into Munich’s dynamic landscape of innovation and tradition.

During our trip, we had the opportunity to visit Steelcase, a trailblazer in workspace design. Stepping into their office, I was immediately impressed by the seamless integration of functionality and creativity. The emphasis on collaborative spaces and ergonomic design challenged more traditional office organization norms. This visit provided a unique opportunity to visit a familiar Michigan-based company abroad.

We also got a chance to visit BMW World, where we had the opportunity to experience engineering excellence and innovation. During a guided tour of the BMW factory, we got to see the craftsmanship and technology that goes into each vehicle. In the museum, vintage BMW models and concept cars showcased the brand’s heritage and approach to mobility.

Our group participated in a tour of the city led by our guide, Patrick, who helped us immerse ourselves in the culture and explore the architecture that defines the city. From the grandness of the New Town Hall (Neues Rathaus) in Marienplatz to the bustling shops in Viktualienmarkt, each stop offered a glimpse into Munich’s past and present. Our journey through Munich’s landmarks led us to the Olympiapark, a symbol of the city’s Olympic legacy and an architectural marvel. Against the backdrop of iconic Olympic structures, we immersed ourselves in the history of athleticism. It was an impactful reminder of Munich’s enduring spirit of resilience and renewal.

We also had the privilege of touring Allianz Stadium, home to FC Bayern Munich. Stepping onto the field, I was overcome with a sense of awe at its magnitude. The history and passion for football emanated from every corner of the stadium and offered a glimpse into the heart and soul of the city’s sporting culture. While we didn’t catch a game at Allianz, we were able to watch the FC Bayern Munich basketball team play at the Audi Dome, which was an incredible experience.

A trip to Munich would not be complete without getting a chance to experience Bavarian traditions, and our visit to Späten Brewery offered the perfect opportunity for just that. Entering the historic brewery, we were greeted with the aroma of hops and the warmth of Bavarian hospitality. From a guided tour to a beer tasting, Späten Brewery allowed us to catch a glimpse of the traditional art of brewing beer.

As we said auf wiedersehen to Munich, I carried with me memories of camaraderie, exploration and education. Each experience offered a unique perspective on the power of innovation to shape our world and enrich our lives. From the informative business presentations to the historic city streets, Munich’s diverse culture left me with a lasting experience I will never forget.
