An MBA from Michigan State University stands out for its holistic approach, offering a well-rounded experience beyond the classroom. I often describe the program as comprising of three key elements:

  1. Academics – Students gain in-depth business knowledge across diverse fields such as supply chain management, marketing, finance, and HR.
  2. Professional Development – The program focuses on building career strategies, skills development, and mastering the interview process.
  3. Student Life – Serving as the cornerstone, it fosters a sense of community and balance.

A great way to immerse yourself in these pillars is by participating in one or more of the many student resource groups. These groups are central to the MBA journey, offering opportunities to develop professional skills, expand networks, explore new topics, and maintain a vibrant social life, which is key to thriving in a rigorous and prestigious program.

Here are some of the MBA student resource groups that currently exist at Broad College:

  • Social: MBA Association
  • Professional associations/clubs: Business & Law, Consulting, Entrepreneurship, Finance, HR, Marketing, Supply Chain
  • Affinity groups: Black MBA, Multicultural, Pride, Veterans, Women.

Last fall semester alone, MBA student resource groups hosted more than 60 events for students. Beyond attending these events, students can take on leadership roles as first-year representatives, gaining insights into the operations of associations and clubs. This experience prepares them to run for executive board roles in their second year.

Last April, I was honored to be appointed president of the MBA Association, leading more than 100 students in the program. My role involves representing the class on various topics and fostering a strong sense of community. To achieve this, we organize events, both large and small, where students feel welcomed and supported.

Working alongside other student resource group presidents, who volunteer their time and talents, we strive to provide a unique, meaningful experience for students. Together, we embrace the philosophy of “leaving it better than we found it,” aiming to create a legacy of dedication that evolves to benefit future classes. Each leader and organization puts careful thought into ensuring classmates feel a sense of belonging in our community.

The MSU culture is built on collaboration and a close-knit community. Participating in activities offered by resource groups strengthens relationships and creates lasting memories. Over the past year, I’ve had the privilege of attending more than 50 events. Here are my favorite experiences from each of the student resource group categories:

  • Social: The MBAA Day of Service was a memorable event where our association visited a community center to clean the facility. This experience allowed me to strengthen relationships with fellow students and alumni while contributing to a meaningful cause. It was also one of the best Saturdays I’ve had during my time in East Lansing. This experience reminded me that acts of service, especially when done as a team, often have profound and immeasurable impacts.
  • Professional/Academics: During my corporate investment classes, I joined the Finance Association to seek support while preparing for exams and completing assignments. This was a crucial step in enhancing my skills and ensuring I was well-equipped to succeed in the course.
  • Affinity: In Spring 2024, the Broad MBA Women Association organized a heartfelt initiative, providing letters and envelopes for students to write messages to women who have profoundly impacted their lives. Having not seen my mother in over a year, this activity gave me a chance to pause, reflect on her influence, especially on my education, and express my gratitude. A few weeks later, she received the letter and called me, deeply moved by the gesture. Her emotional response reminded me of the power of simple yet meaningful actions. I’ll always be grateful to the incredible women in the program who thoughtfully created such a beautiful and impactful activity.

In essence, the MBA experience is truly unique, and my involvement in student resource groups has elevated it in ways I never imagined. These groups have not only embraced me but have also welcomed my family, allowing us to actively participate and serve together. The memories created through this experience will stay with me forever.
