ALIS was one of the most impactful experiences I have had during my time at Michigan State University. Going on this trip allowed me to step outside of the classroom and into the real world of hospitality, where I was able to meet countless professionals and build connections with people I would never have encountered otherwise. It was not only an opportunity to learn, but also to envision my future more clearly and confidently.
One of the most valuable aspects of the trip was the access we were given to industry professionals. Through our professor, we were invited into brokers’ deal rooms at well-known firms such as Colliers. This was an experience that felt incredibly exclusive and eye-opening. Sitting in those rooms, listening to conversations, and observing how deals are structured gave me real insight into how hospitality real estate operates on a day-to-day basis. It moved the concepts I have learned in class from theoretical to tangible. I began to understand the pace, the stakes, and the level of expertise required to succeed in this field. More importantly, it made me even more excited about pursuing a career in hospitality real estate. Seeing professionals actively working, negotiating, and analyzing opportunities reinforced that this is an industry where I can see myself thriving.

Hospitality real estate is not just about numbers and deals; it is also about creating spaces that people experience and remember. Talking to individuals involved in the design and development process helped me appreciate how collaboration across disciplines is essential to bringing a project to life.
Beyond the exposure to brokers and real estate professionals, I also had the opportunity to meet architects and designers, which added another layer to my understanding of the industry. It showed me that successful developments are the result of both financial strategy and creative vision working together.
One of the most memorable moments of the trip happened during a reception. I happened to sit down next to one of the kindest and most inspiring women I met throughout the entire experience. As we began talking, I learned that she had worked with NEOM, the Saudi company behind ambitious projects like The Line. Hearing her speak about her experiences working on such large-scale, innovative developments was incredible. She shared insights not only about the technical aspects of these projects but also about the challenges and vision required to execute something so groundbreaking. What stood out most to me was her willingness to share her journey and offer advice. She was genuinely interested in my aspirations and encouraged me to stay curious and open to opportunities, even ones that may feel out of reach.
Another aspect of ALIS that made the experience so meaningful was the people I shared it with. I had the chance to meet other students from different universities who were just as passionate about hospitality as I am. Being surrounded by like-minded individuals who are driven, curious, and excited about the industry was incredibly motivating. It created an environment where conversations felt natural and engaging, and it was inspiring to hear about others’ goals and experiences.

At the same time, the trip allowed me to grow closer to my classmates at MSU. Spending several days together in a new environment, attending events, and exploring the city helped strengthen our relationships in a way that wouldn’t have been possible on campus alone. We were able to support each other, share experiences, and celebrate the opportunities we were given. Those shared moments made the trip even more memorable.
In addition to the professional and academic benefits, I also genuinely had an amazing time in Los Angeles, especially since it was my first time there. Being in such a vibrant and dynamic city added another layer to the experience. From exploring new places to simply taking in the atmosphere, LA made the trip feel both exciting and inspiring. It was the perfect backdrop for an experience that combined learning, networking, and personal growth.
