His Spartans Will tenacity took Ryan Devlin (Hospitality Business, ’03) to Hollywood to chase his dreams, and he has since secured celebrity status after appearing on shows like CSI, Brothers and Sisters, Jane the Virgin, and Law and Order. But, his inner entrepreneur craved a passion project outside of TV sets.
When Devlin and some friends took a humanitarian trip to Liberia, he was terrified by what he saw: global hunger, firsthand. He decided then and there to take immediate action and founded This Bar Saves Lives, a one-for-one nutrition bar. For every bar sold, This Bar Saves Lives donates a packet of life-saving food to a child in need. To date, the growing operation has distributed over 750,000 packets to starving children in countries like Haiti, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Philippines, Nepal, and Guatemala.
“A child dies every 12 seconds from severe acute malnutrition, and it doesn’t have to be that way. All they need is a safe caloric food aid, and that’s what we donate,” Devlin told College News in a recent interview.
This Bar Saves Lives was recently expanded into 1,000 Target stores, and is sold in coffee shops, natural food stores, select Whole Foods Markets and available on the website.
