Broad College welcomes new leaders ahead of 2022-23 year

As we begin the 2022-23 academic year, the Broad College of Business welcomes our next generation of faculty to lead in both existing and newly created positions.

Interim Dean Designee

Judith Whipple

Judith Whipple, Donald J. Bowersox and Robert W. Thull Professor in Logistics and Supply Chain Management, has been selected to serve as interim dean, pending approval by the Michigan State University Board of Trustees at its Sept. 9 meeting.

Whipple, an award-winning scholar and teacher, has been a faculty member at MSU since 1998 and with the Broad College specifically since 2006. Her extensive experience in the classroom has led her to teach at every level, from undergraduate students to Full-Time and Executive MBA students to doctoral candidates. In addition, Whipple has served as the faculty director of the college’s M.S. in Supply Chain Management program since 2018. 

Whipple truly is a Spartan for life, having grown up in the Lansing area and becoming a proud Broad alumna in 1994, when she earned her Ph.D. in marketing and logistics. She brings a comprehensive perspective to the interim dean role, not only knowing the ins and outs of the Broad College experience as a student and faculty member but also as a parent of three children who have followed her footsteps to become Spartans.

As interim dean designee, Whipple is eager to build upon the college’s successes and accomplishments to continue fostering a connected and engaged community.

Associate Dean for Faculty and Doctoral Programs

Chris Hogan

Chris Hogan, Russell E. Palmer Professor in Accounting, has been appointed interim associate dean for faculty and doctoral programs.

In this role, Hogan will be responsible for academic human resources and budget for our faculty. In addition, she will oversee the college’s doctoral programs, including supporting their recruitment, supervision and placements. She will forge strong relationships with partners across campus while working closely with associate deans, assistant deans and academic unit heads to address related matters.

Since 2006, Hogan has served the college enthusiastically in various capacities. She has served as co-director of the accounting doctoral program and, most recently, was chairperson of the Department of Accounting and Information Systems from 2017 to 2022.

Associate Dean for Undergraduate Programs

Richard Spreng

Richard Spreng, associate professor of marketing, has been appointed to serve as associate dean for undergraduate programs, replacing Cheri Speier-Pero, Ernst & Young Professor of Accounting and Information Systems.

Spreng has been with the Broad College since 1991 and has contributed to undergraduate and graduate programs in many ways. He co-founded the sales leadership minor, a joint program between the Broad College and the College of Communication Arts and Sciences that attracts many students from across the university, and serves as the academic director of the college’s top-ranked Master of Science in Marketing Research, a program he founded in 2010.

Spreng has previously served as a leader within the college, as the interim chairperson for the Department of Marketing from 2019 to 2021. As he steps into this new role as associate dean, he is looking forward to enhancing the undergraduate student experience and continuing to embrace the college’s strategic themes every step of the way.

Department Chair: Accounting and Information Systems

Marilyn Johnson

Marilyn Johnson, professor of accounting, will become the newest chairperson of the Department of Accounting and Information Systems, replacing Chris Hogan, Russell E. Palmer Endowed Professor of Accounting.

Johnson has been with the Broad College since 2000, teaching at the undergraduate, master’s and doctoral levels. She started her academic career lecturing at Washington State University and then moved on to the University of Michigan for eight years prior to coming to Michigan State.

Johnson has a deep commitment to academic and scholarly excellence, which will ensure that the department continues to grow its rankings and strong legacy in both academic and practitioner communities under her leadership.

Department Chair: Supply Chain Management

Jason Miller

Jason Miller, associate professor of supply chain management, has been named interim chairperson of the Department of Supply Chain Management.

Miller has been with the Broad College since 2016, teaching supply chain management courses to undergraduate, master’s and doctoral students. His insights on consumer supply chain topics are frequently quoted in national media outlets such as NPR Marketplace and the Wall Street Journal, and he provides expert commentary on various issues that affect supply chain practitioners.

In his new role, Miller is eager to lead the department through this time of transition while maintaining its reputation of excellence as home to the nation’s No. 1 supply chain management programs.

Faculty Director of the Burgess Institute for Entrepreneurship and Innovation

Laurel Ofstein

Laurel Ofstein joins the college as the faculty director of the Burgess Institute for Entrepreneurship and Innovation and will also have a primary appointment in the Department of Management as an associate professor.

Ofstein comes from Western Michigan University, where she served as the director of the Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation. She received her Ph.D. in Business Administration with a focus in entrepreneurship from the University of Illinois Chicago in 2013.

At MSU, Ofstein will direct the academic and programmatic strategy for the entrepreneurship and innovation ecosystem, including teaching entrepreneurship courses, overseeing the minor and conducting research on entrepreneurship. As she takes on this work, Ofstein is eager to further solidify the university’s standing as one of the best destinations for future entrepreneurs.

Managing Director of the Center for Ethical and Socially Responsible Leadership

Beth Hammond

Beth Hammond joins the college as the inaugural managing director of the Center for Ethical and Socially Responsible Leadership.

Hammond comes from Eastern Illinois University, where she served as director of civic engagement and volunteerism. She brings a wealth of experience creating volunteer service, co-curricular learning and service-learning opportunities to the college.

She understands the start-up nature of our center — which officially launched in March 2022 — and what it will take to get it up and running. Before working at EIU, she co-founded a local council of Girls on the Run, a nonprofit that designs programming for third- to eighth-grade girls’ social, emotional, physical and behavioral skills to successfully navigate life experiences. Her creativity and energy will help bring the center to life.
